Boston's Menino Throws His Support to Schofield

Long-time mayor will like put his election machine out for Brighton attorney.

It appears that Robert McCarthy won't get all the high-profile endorsements in the four-way race to be state senator from the Second Suffolk and Middlesex.

Boston's Mayor Tom Menino announced today, Dec. 6, that he is backing Brighton Attorney Tim Schofield in next week’s special election to replace former State Senator Steve Tolman up on Beacon Hill.

"I’m supporting Tim Schofield for State Senate because he will put people
ahead of politics," said Menino in a press release from the Schofield campaign.

The endorsement comes days after McCarthy, the former head of the state's professional firefighters union, won the backing of Tolman and former US Rep. Joe Kennedy.

"I have always admired the way that Mayor Menino puts people first, and
that's what I will do as State Senator," said Schofield in the release.

"The people in our district want a bold progressive leader who will be a strong voice for our working families, and I'm proud to earn the support of those who show that same leadership," said Schofield.

And Menino's endorsement will come with the backing of the powerful City Hall election machine which has proven since Menino took office in 1993 to have a very effective Get-Out-The-Vote operation in Boston.

Boston's Brighton neighborhood as well as sections of the Fenway and Back Bay lie in the Second Suffolk.

"In the years that I have known Tim Schofield, he has always demonstrated
a dedication in his daily life to helping those in need. From fighting for
a neighborhood’s interests against institutional expansion to protecting
individual civil rights, I have been honored to know and to work with Tim
on many issues that impact the residents of Boston," wrote Menino.
