See What Belmont Roads Will Be Repaved This Year

If you live around Waverley Street, you're a winner!

We all have stories about Belmont roads: how auto mechanics know you're a resident just by looking at your vehicle's out-of-whack alignment and the pot-holed streets resembling a lunar landscape.

But each year, a few streets are selected to have a facelift that will bring a smile to homeowners and drivers.

Glenn Clancy, the town's engineer and head of the Office of Community Development, announced to the Belmont Board of Selectmen on Monday, July 15, the "winning" roads that will be repaved during this year's construction season.

The town put out bids for this year's pavement management work last month and selected a low bid of $1.330 million (for work estimated by the town at $1.550 million) from Hudson-based E.H. Perkins Construction which repaved Belmont roads last year.

When asked by Selectmen Chair Mark Paolillo when the repaving would begin, Clancy said "Tomorrow."

This year the work will be targeted just outside Waverley Square along Waverley Street and those side streets. Some of the roads are being repaired through a grading system ranking streets by their physical condition; the lower the number the most in need of repair.

In addition, many of the roads, including Waverley Street, have undergone recent  infrastructure repairs, so they are unlikely to be "dug up" in the near future, said Clancy.

The lucky roads this is year are:

A Street: from Grant Avenue to the railroad tracks
B Street: from Grant Avenue to the town property.
Irving Street: from Beech to Waverley streets.
Davis Road: from Trapelo Road to Irving Street.
Hawthorne Street: from Trapelo Road.
Cambridge Street: from Waverley to Hawthorne streets.
White Street: Trapelo Road to Grant Avenue.
Grant Avenue: from White to C streets.
C Street: Grant Avenue to the town property.
Park Road: from Belmont to Grove streets.
Springfield Street: from Belmont Street to Fairview Avenue.
Dalton Road: from Washington Street to Grosvenor Road.
Hamilton Road: from Concord Avenue to the Cambridge town line.
Sycamore Street: from White Street to Trapelo Road.
Waverley Street: from Trapelo Road to Harris Street.

Royal Road resident Vincent Stanton asked the Selectmen if the town has any formal program to evaluate the work performed since the repaving have not been up to snuff in the past.

"I always worry about selecting the lowest bid," said Stanton.

Clancy said that there is no question issues have arisen from the work performed in the past.

"What you need is good inspection" of the work as it is being done, said Clancy.

"But we do our best to stay on top of it," he said.
