Update: Now Planning Board, Rec Activities Cancelled Tonight … But Vote Still On For New Superintendent

Events a no go for Tuesday night but the School Committee will brave the snow to determine the district's next superintendent.

Update: 4:30 p.m.: The town has cancelled the Planning Board meeting set for 7 p.m. tonight to discuss placing solar panels on the Wellington Elementary School and the Recreation Department will not hold events tonight such as the lap swimming in the Higginbottom Pool at Belmont High School. But so far, the School Committee will still be meeting.

2:10 p.m.: While there is just a light coating of flaky snow on the roads and sidewalks as of 2 p.m., the threat of a pending pounding of the white stuff this afternoon has resulted in Dr. Dan Richards, principal of Belmont High School, canceling athletic and fine arts activities this afternoon, Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The cancellation has caused the postponement of the Belmont High School Girls' Basketball team's home opener vs. Melrose at the Wenner Field House.

But it would need to be a blizzard of biblical proportions to put a halt to the Belmont School Committee's deliberation and vote to select the next Belmont District School Superintendent.

The Committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the large community room of the Chenery Middle School, 95 Washington St. where it will vote to extend an offer to one candidate with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2014.

Anne McKenzie, currently executive director of the Lower Pioneer Valley Education Collaborative and John Phelan who is the assistant superintendent of the Milton Public Schools are the two finalists for the post.
