Belmont Girls' Lacrosse Push Top Ranked Winchester in Home Loss

Two more Belmont female athletes to continue their careers playing college sports.

It was a perfect day Saturday for a lacrosse game: bright sun, warm temperatures and a light breeze.

There were, unfortunately, two dampers to the match between Belmont High School and the number one team in the state, Winchester High School; the game started at 9 a.m. and the Sachems handed Belmont their second defeat of the season, 20-14, at Harris Field.

While Belmont (8-2-1) could not match the strategic skills of the Sachems, the Marauders never let the score dictate their own performance, coming back from a 10-4 deficit 14 seconds into the second half to match the top rated team in the state goal-for-goal in the final 24:46 minutes. While Winchester (14-1) was best offensively setting up their chances from set plays, Belmont's speed and physical character was best demonstrated as they raced up the field.

The 14 tallys Belmont scored were by far the most goals Winchester has given up in a win for the season (The Sachems gave up 17 in a lost to Westwood) as senior scoring leader Caroline McCarthy led the Marauder attack as the Hamilton College bound captain drove in five goals, three in the first half.

Joining her on the scoring sheet were fellow seniors Britta Marden and Izzy Goldstein with four and three goals, all in the second half. Defensive specialist Becca Moore had three ground ball credited.

Belmont's Hunsberger, Marden heading to Dennison

Belmont seniors Hollis Hunsberger and Britta Marden will not be handing up their spikes for good at the end of their high school careers. Hunsberger and Marden will be heading to Div. 3 Denison University in Granville, Ohio.

Hunsberger will be playing lacrosse for a team that recorded a 15-5 record this year and made the NCAA playoffs. Marden will be taking her sticks to Granville to play field hockey for the 18-2 Big Red who lost in the NCAA Div. 3 quarterfinals this season to MIT.

They join teammates Caroline McCarthy (Hamilton College) and Becca Moore (Bentley University) who will continue playing in college.
