Belmont Schools Closed Wednesday Due to Snow Storm

Third day cancelled due to weather this school year.

Belmont Public Schools will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 22, due to the pending snow storm that will create blizzard-like conditions overnight, according to Belmont High School Principal Dr. Dan Richards.

All school closing calls are difficult to make as weather conditions change on the fly. While Belmont received 3 to 4 inches, Braintree - just on the other side of Boston - got 15 and the town is at a standstill. BTW/Melrose is using a two-hour delay.

As for hardy New Englanders, they sold their homes and are living in Port St. Lucie.

Many towns still use the "delay." Why doesn't Belmont anymore? I understand some towns got hammered. We did not. There is no reason that school had to be canceled last night as opposed to waiting until early this morning. We are letting the bluster of tv news and their desire to boost ratings get the best of us with fear tactics..."blizzards, polar vortex" and such. Weather conditions do change on the fly; more reason to use a wait and see approach as opposed to jumping the gun.

A two hour delay announced last night would have been appropriate and then cancel if necessary in the morning.
