Chenery Community Coming Together to Cope with Student's Death

Students, parents, staff and teachers to gather Monday at 6 p.m. to remember Maya Edwards.

The Chenery Middle School community will be able to come together on Monday, July 8, to allow students, parents, staff and teachers to cope with the death this week of a recent Chenery graduate.

Maya Edwards, a incoming freshman at Belmont High School, died after a long and difficult fight with cancer, according to Chenery Principal Kristen St. George. Edwards is survived by her parents and her younger brother.

"Being disconnected from each other during this time can be stressful and upsetting for us and it is our hope that this event will allow us a small chance to reconnect with our CMS family during this sad time," said St. George.

On Monday, July 8, at 6 p.m., the School Department will be opening the school to welcome all members of the CMS community "to come together and support each other as we begin to cope with this loss," said St. George.

The community will gather in the auditorium for some words and a moment of silence.

After that, students will have an opportunity to spend some time with each other and check in with school counselors, teachers and administrators in small groups, as needed.

"By 7 p.m., we will ask students and families to begin to head home so as to allow staff the opportunity to do the same," said St. George.
