Scharfman 5K Run Gets A New Date, Course

New date for 5K run through Belmont now Nov. 17, a chance to get in shape for Thanksgiving.

Belmont and area runners will have a chance to work up an appetite for Thanksgiving as the Foundation for Belmont Education received the OK by the Belmont Board of Selectmen to move the date of the Dan Scharfman 5K Memorial Run from Oct. 6 to Sunday, Nov. 17 at 9:15 a.m.

The move was due to a crowded calendar in October – Belmont Serves and the Joey's Park community build as well as the special primary election for Congress was close to the race date as well as a slew of road races at that time – and it allows for more time to coordinate the event between town departments and the Foundation, according to town officials.

In addition, the route of the race will have less turns and curves, starting at Belmont High School's Harris Field, running uphill for about a mile on Orchard, School and Elizabeth to the Payson Park Reservoir then downhill on Oakley and Goden, then around Clay Pit Pond and back to Harris Field for the finish.

There will also be a one-mile run/walk from Harris Field around Clay Pit Pond at 10:15 a.m.

Effected roads (Concord Avenue, Orchard, Stone, School and Goden) will be closed before the race and fully opened by 10:45 a.m.

Money raised by the event will help fund the Innovation Teaching Initiative, a four- year, $450,000 campaign to bring iPad technology to the High School and 8th grade and provide funds to teachers to learn new learning skills using the new technology.
