Three Belmont Swimmers Named All-Stars, Two Place in Division Championships

Senior Johnson and freshman Kelley lead the Marauders in the pool this post season.

Belmont High School Swimmers senior Ben Johnson, freshman Andrew Kelley, sophomore Thomas Zembowicz and senior diver Joe Tocci were all honored as Middlesex League all-stars for the season, last week. 

Middlesex League all-stars which were determined based on performance at the League Meet.

On Sunday, Feb. 17, first-year head coach Bobby Reardon brought several Belmont swimmers to the pool at Harvard University in Cambridge for the Division 2 State Swimming championships. Belmont scored 15 points at the meet's completion.

In his speciality, Kelley was the top freshman finishing 11th in the 100 yard (all distances in yards) backstroke in 56.90 seconds, a marked improvement over his seasonal best of 57.62. His placement earned Belmont six points. 

Kelley also swam the 500 free style in 5:13.82, the third best among 9th graders.

Johnson matched Kelley's place knocking 1.3 seconds off his best time this year finishing the 100 breast stroke in 1:04.32 for 11th and six points. 

Johnson scored an additional three points for Belmont finishing in 14th in the 100 butterfly in 55.79, a second improvement in his yearly time. 

Kelley also swam the 500 free style in 5:13.82, the third best among 9th graders. 

In the Medley Relay, Kelley, Johnson and juniors Kevin Chen and Andrew Walsh came in 17th in 1:48.70, an improvement of half-a-second over their best time in the 2012-13 season.

In the diving arena, senior Tocci – who just started diving this season – finished 22nd. Reardon said his commitment to diving and team spirit was responsible for interesting two boys to take up diving, allowing Tocci a lasting legacy to the program.
