Field Hockey: Marauders Upset Minutemen, 2-0, To Top League Standings

Marauders now at 7-2-0 at the mid-point of the season.

It was suppose to be a game the Belmont High School Field Hockey team would not come home with a victory.

The Marauders was heading up Route 2 Friday afternoon, Sept. 27, for a match against Lexington High School which had themselves built an impressive 5-1 record to take the top spot in the Middlesex League Liberty Division with a powerful attack front line.

"We didn't expect to win," said freshman starter Annemarie Habelow.

"But our captains (Sydney Perkins, Kendall Brown and Michelle Hayner) were really enthusiastic and they got the team amped up for the game," said Habelow.

As the sun was setting Friday afternoon, so was Lexington's lead in the league as Belmont (7-2-0) finished their chances and played a "bend-but-not-break" defense to head back home with a 2-0 victory.

At the midpoint of the season, Belmont – which is on a four game winning streak – needs two wins out of their final nine games to make the playoffs.

Habelow, Belmont's freshman forward phenom, scored at the start of the game and senior Perkins tallied midway through the second half to give the Marauders their margin of victory.

Lexington (5-2-0) showed its quality by controlling the game and playing most of the first half in Belmont's end of the field. But Belmont was able to have one or more shots on net in the few times they entered Lexington's zone.

"This was a huge victory," said Habelow after the game. "This game said that we are determined and we're finally figuring out how to play together."
