Sports: Big Season Finales for Swimming, Girls' Soccer; Volleyball Playoff Bound

Final matches have importance for soccer, swimming.

In April, 1775, Paul Revere needed to know only one thing: one by land and two by sea.

Today, a pair of Belmont High School sports teams – one that plies its trade on the water and the other playing on a pitch – also have that phrase in mind as they prepare for the final seasonal matches: Girls' Soccer needs a single point today to reach the playoffs while Girls' Swimming will need to defeat the second of two long-time rivals to secure their first outright League title

• Girls' Soccer will be seeking to grab at least a single point with a tie or a win today, Friday, Oct. 25 to defend their North Division II sectional championship. But it won't be easy as the Marauders will need to take the point from archrival Winchester High  at their home pitch.

Head Coach Paul Graham will have Erin McLaughlin back on the team after an injury at the 3:45 p.m. game being played at Knowlton Stadium located on the Mystic Valley Parkway in back McCall Middle School at 458 Main St.

• Last year, Belmont Girls' Swimming shared the Middlesex League Liberty Division championship with Reading and Lexington high schools. This year, they want the title for themselves.

And they can achieve that by defeating Lexington at today's meet starting at 5:30 p.m. at Middlesex Tech in Lexington. Swimmers on Head Coach Ev Crosscup's squad  to focus on are butterfly specialist and relay mainstay Jessie Blake-West, diver Thea Kelsey, 100 free's Solvay Metelmann, distance swimmer Haruka Uchida and backstroker Maya Nagashima.

The match takes place at 758 Marrett Rd. just off Route 2 in Lexington.

• Tonight, playoff bound Belmont High School Field Hockey will be honoring their seniors before tonight's game at 6:30 p.m. with Winchester High at Harris Field.

• The goal for the Belmont High School Girls' Volleyball this season was a realistic chance at making the sectional playoffs for the first time in a number of years.

"They are the most consistent team I've had and they are never out of any game they play so I saw us having a real chance at states," said Belmont Head Coach Jen Couture.

And on Wednesday, Oct. 25, the Marauders achieved their target as they defeated host Woburn, three sets to nothing, to reach 10 wins and secured a spot in the sectional playoffs with two games remaining.
