Hundred of Belmont Residents, Hot Dogs Mark Joey's Park Celebration

Saturday's event marks beginning for stretch run before October's build.

Hundreds turned out on Saturday, May 18, for a celebration of Joey’s Park as plans to build a replacement park in October are finalized. The party also served as the official kick-off to an on-line fundraising auction at the Web site: www.joeyspark.org.

“It was a magical evening,” says Diane Miller, Friends of Joey’s Park co-chair.

“Joey’s Park has been bringing this community together for generations and it did so again last weekend. Families were able to relax and enjoy food, music, friends – and, of course, the playground,” she added.

Red “Join the Fun, Join the Build” balloons dotted the playground and children scribbled chalk messages across the well-worn wooden planks. The 24-year-old park will be replaced in October with a playground that retains the castle-like feel of the current structure, but will be made of modern “splinter-free” materials and incorporate elements that today’s children requested such as a hill tunnel and zip line.

“We have had absolutely amazing support from this community in planning the park and raising money to build it, “ says Ellen Schreiber, co-chair of the Friends of Joey’s Park.

“And we are within reach of our fundraising goal.  Now is the time to buy a brick for the walkway and to bid in our online auction.”

Among the items up for auction is a rafting trip, interior design services, the opportunity to be in a girls’ clothing fashion shoot, premium Red Sox seats and gift certificates to restaurants, boutiques and music classes.
