Take a Walk: Belmontian Club Make Strides in Battle Against Breast Cancer

Belmont High raised the second most funds by high schoolers at Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

Under cloudy skies this Saturday, Oct. 5, shifts of Belmont High School students who are members of the Belmontian Club dried cars to raise money – all tips and $1 per car – for breast cancer.

And despite lulls in the day when the rains came, Belmont High School's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer team appears to have gained from the generosity of many donors, raising more than $1,100.

Then on Sunday, Oct. 6, on a day which started and ended in a steady drizzle, 22 students accompanied by Alice Melnikoff, the high school's Community Service Coordinator, walked in Making Strides.  The rain did not dampen the spirits of determination of the group.

At the end of the walk, four students from the Belmontian Club were onstage at the Hatch Shell along the Charles River in Boston in front of thousands of participants, representing its second place finish in last year’s Making Strides High School Challenge. With 50 schools participating, Belmont High rose to the number two spot by raising $13,200 through many activities which brought together many segments of the school and Belmont – cheerleaders, the football team, the student body, residents and merchants – who came together in support of this important cause.

This year's placement will be determined in December.
