Fall Back into Activities: The Telling of 'Shah Jahan', Register to Vote, Sports to See

Lots of stuff to do this week in Belmont.

It's officially fall and the coming week will feel like it as temps will peak in the 60s until Friday so get out your sweaters and hats as the first frost will occur in the next three weeks. So here are a few events coming up this week.

• If you're thinking about voting in the special party primary for the 5th Massachusetts Congressional District seat and you are not registered to vote or belong to some far-out political party (yes, I'm talking about you Pirate Party people), you need to visit the wonderful staff at the Belmont Town Clerk's office by 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25 to register or qualify to vote. Also, the staff is taking absentee ballots right now.

• Belmont Town Hall's historic auditorium will be transformed into 17th-century India for the SETU (Stage Ensemble Theater Unit) theatrical presentation of "Shah Jahan," the English dramatization of a story of the world’s greatest love and worst treachery during the Mughal period in India. A talented cast of thirty-five actors and dancers will be performing this original play by D. L. Roy with translation and added scenes and direction by Subrata Das. The drama takes place Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $11.

• Join the Belmont Public Library for the book launch party of local favorite Julie Berry's new Young Adult novel "All the Truth That’s In Me," on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• On Monday, Sept. 23, Belmont School Committee will fill the vacancy on its six-member board as it and the Belmont Board of Selectmen will vote on five candidates who are aiming to fill the temporary seat that will be back before voters in April. Five are applying.

• Also on Monday, Paprika Kids at 404 Trapelo Rd., will be registering youngsters for a sing-along concert by Lenka, who was earned a Music Together Certification-level status from the Center for Music and Young Children in Princeton, NJ. Call to register for the free event at 617-993-3431.

This week in sports, Belmont Football welcomes the Minutemen from Lexington to Harris Field on Friday at 6 p.m. while Boys' Soccer, ranked 18th in the Boston Globe Top 20, take on league rivals Woburn (Monday, Sept. 23 at 3:45 p.m.) and Lexington (6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26). And don't miss the excitement of Volleyball on Monday (4 p.m. vs. Bedford) and Friday (again at 4 p.m. vs. Woburn).
