Final Push on New Joey's Park, Fire Dept's Open House, Walk to School Day

Just a few events in the week ahead in Belmont, Mass.

• The final six-days of the community build to construct a new Joey's Park playground will be begin at Wednesday, Oct 9 at 9 a.m. and last through Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 14. 

• The Belmont Fire Department is holding a Fire Safety Open House at Belmont Fire Department Headquarters, 299 Trapelo Rd. on Monday, Oct. 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Stop by to get some fire safety tips and a free slice of pizza.

Wednesday, Oct. 9 is International Walk to School Day. Belmont students will join with parents, teachers, community leaders and celebrity walkers as the town joins more than 110 communities in Massachusetts and 6,000 worldwide to promote a healthy way to get to school and start the day.

• Parents and children whose use English as their second language and are new to Belmont's Elementary Schools are invited to come to learn how to use the library on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the library's Assembly Room.  Your children will begin the night with you, and then while parents have an online guided tour of the library, the Children's Librarian will read stories for your children in the Children's Room. Tell your ESL friends and neighbors, too!

The Community Preservation Committee will be holding a public meeting Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Belmont Gallery of Art on the third floor of the Homer Building (in the Town Hall complex) where those seeking to use part of the CPC's $2.6 million funding pool for 2014 projects will make presentations concerning their applications.

Introduction to Drama for Adults is an eight-week class that is free of charge and begins on Tuesday, Oct. 8, between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the Beech Street Center. Taught by a retired drama teacher, Cheryl Ann Welch, the class will cover the vocabulary of the theater as well as improvisation. You will learn how to analyze short scenes and to act and direct them. If there is enough interest we can put together a short program to be performed at the Center, and increase the number of classes.

• In sports, Belmont High School Varsity Boys' Soccer will be at home Monday, Oct. 7 vs Burlington at 3:45 p.m., Cross Country will be on a wet Clay Pit Pond course on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. while Field Hockey takes place at 6 p.m. also on Tuesday. Girls' Swimming on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. and Football under the Friday Night Lights, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.
