Singarama! Monday, A Night Out in Cushing Square, A Caning Recalled

Events occurring this week in Belmont.

• There will literally be hundreds of singers from every school in the district performing tonight at Belmont High School's auditorium during the annual Singarama! being held Monday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. It's free and a lot of fun. And expect a final sing-a-long to finish the concert.

Author Stephen Puleo returns to Belmont to speak about his latest book, "The Caning: The Assault that Drove America to Civil War" on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Assembly Room of the Belmont Public Library. Sponsored by the Belmont Historical Society, Puleo – whose book "Dark Tide: The Great Molasses Flood of 1919," was the "One Book, One Belmont" selection of 2011 – will speak about the day in 1856 when ardent pro-slavery Congressman Preston S. Brooks of South Carolina strode into the United States Senate Chamber and delivered a vicious beating to renowned anti-slavery Senator Charles Sumner with a gold-topped walking cane. Ouch!

• The third annual Shopping Night Fundraiser to Support Wellington PTO will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Enjoy a night of shopping and dining with friends to support local Cushing Square merchants and the Wellington PTO. Ten percent of sales will  benefit the Wellington PTO which supports afterschool enrichment programs, field trips, and many other educational activities. Shops such as Jenny Boston, Revolve, Zia’s Clothing Outlet and Helena’s are opening their doors for an evening of extended shopping or you can enjoy a delicious appetizer or relax with a drink at Savinos. Can’t make it out that night? Don’t worry. Make an appointment at Shaseleen Spa during the day.

Paprika Kids, 404 Trapelo Rd., will be holding a free Holiday Ornament Craft Workshop on Friday, Nov. 22, at 4 p.m. where local artist Lauren Bloom will bring her creativity to give kids a chance to create their own unique ornament to bring home. Supplies provided by Paprika Kids. Recommended for children five year old and up.
