Special Town Meeting on Monday and ... , 'The King Stag', Soccer Playoffs and Much More

Events happening in the coming week in Belmont.

• Belmont will be holding a Special Town Meeting on Monday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Chenery Middle School. Up for discussion and a vote from the 290 representatives will be articles concerning a six-month demolition delay of "significant" residential structures, the financing plan for a new synthetic "turf" surface at the high school's Harris Field, a new bylaw that will require homeowners to shovel the snow from "their" sidewalks and regulations and licensing of yard sales. Everyone is hoping that all the articles will be voted on Monday so no one needs to come back for a second night on Wednesday. 

• The Belmont High School Performing Arts Company under the leadership of director Ezra Flam in his inaugural theatrical production with PAC will present Carlo Gozzi's Commedia Dell’Arte masterpiece "The King Stag". Performances of this tale of love, magic, animal puppetry and a roaming bear are Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 7 to Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Belmont High School auditorium. Belmont High School Boys' Soccer will be hosting their first home playoff game since ... well, a long time as the Marauders take on the Dracut High School "Middies" in first-round action at Harris Field on Monday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $6, $4 for students/seniors. Bundle up and come out to cheer your Marauders!

Peter Hoffman, a Certified Financial Planner with Woburn-based Trust Advisory Group, Ltd., will speak on the whys and hows of planning for the costs of a higher education so you can send your kids to college without endangering your retirement or burdening them with years of debt on Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Belmont Public Library's Assembly Room. This free program is sponsored by the non-profit Financial Planning Association of Massachusetts as part of its mission to bring financial planning education to the public.

• The Youth, Chancel, and Junior Choirs of The First Church in Belmont, Universal Unitarian will be presenting performances of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado." Performances are Thursday, Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 8, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 9, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 10, 3 p.m. Tickets are $12; Email requests are available as are web purchases (search for "Mikado."). Telephone orders can be obtained at 617-484-2149.

• The public is welcome to attend a free presentation on Thursday, Nov. 7 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Flett Room of the Belmont Public Library on "Global Artists, Global Citizens," a year-long project started at the Belmont Afterschool Enrichment Collaborative with an after-school program in Namugongo, Uganda The project creates cross-cultural relationships and understanding through the arts between the two after-school programs a world apart. 

State Sen. Will Brownsberger will be hold office hours from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, at the Belmont Public Library Claflin Room, 336 Concord Ave.

• The Belmont and Watertown Democratic Town Committees invite voters and the public to meet State Sen. Katherine Clark, the Democratic nominee for the Massachusetts 5th Congressional District representative in the auditorium at Coolidge Apartments, 319 Arlington St., Watertown on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. Clark is running to replace Ed Markey in Congress in the Dec. 10 Special Election.
