Scary alarm May 6 – Just before 11 a.m., Engine 2, Rescue 1 and a command car were sent for a possible medical emergency involving natural gas leaking in a house on Dalton Road. The arriving companies quickly performed a check of the basement, first floor and second floor using a pair of the department's gas detection equipment which displayed normal readings on each level. The smoke detectors – which prompted the call – are hard-wired throughout the structure and the residential CO detectors were audibly indicating no carbon monoxide in the building. Separate battery-operated CO detectors were not sounding and indicated a normal environment. The incident was determined to be a carbon monoxide alarm that had gone off for no reason. …

Wet roadway contributes to two vehicle mishap at 7:50 a.m.
Wet roads contributed to a two-vehicle accident between a car and a motorcycle at approximately 7:50 a.m. on Common Street, snarling morning rush hour traffic in and out of Belmont Center. A motorcyclist was taken on a back brace by Watertown Fire Rescue to an area hospital after the man was initially treated by Belmont Fire crews who responded to a call from Belmont Police. The accident victim appeared conscious and communicating with Fire Department personnel. The driver of the car, which was stopped directly across from the motorcycle in the outbound lane, did not appeared injured. Initial reports suggest that the heavy early morning rain caused either visibility or handling problems that led to the high-powered cycle spilling onto the …

Remote control fraud May 4 – A little before 2 p.m., a Broad Street resident called the police to say that a caller attempted to have her provide information about her computer account that would have allowed him to have remote access to her personal computer. She hung up on the man. Not that kind of party May 4 – It was Friday night just after 8 p.m., when a call came into the station from a resident who said it appeared that a good number of teens were partying in a Bay State Road residency. When an officer arrived at the house, a teenage girl answered the door. Apparently, she had some friends over while her mom was away on an out-of-state trip. When the officer asked what sort of party was going on, the teen said it wasn't the …

Before the rains came April 30 – Just before 1 p.m., Engine 2 was sent to Blanchard Road and Concord Avenue for a small brush-and-grass fire. It was extinguished by the personnel at the scene. Scenario 1: Someone locks themselves out of their house ... May 3 – At 4:05 p.m., the fire crew from Engine 2 was sent to a Concord Avenue address after a nanny locked herself out of a second floor apartment. Not only were her keys inside the unit, so was the one-year-old baby girl she was taking of. Firefighters placed a ladder outside the second-story living room window and saw that the child did not appear injured or in any danger. Rather then knock in a door or smash a window, the fire crew decided to wait the 10 minutes for the landlord to …

The widow of James Algeri, retired Belmont firefighter killed in an accident in Florida in April, seeking to thank two women who stopped to help her shortly after the tragic event.
James Algeri was a Belmont firefighter who worked in the old Waverley Station until he retired a few years back. After hanging up the hose and helmet, Algeri and his wife, Mary, lived in the Highland Lakes community of Palm Harbor, Florida for part of the year and in Massachusetts the rest of the year. On the morning of April 18, Algeri was killed when he walked into the path of a Solar Sanitation garbage truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Algeri's widow is now hoping to reconnect with two women who stopped to help her shortly after the accident. Fraud prevented April 28 – The system worked! A Winn Street man said that someone attempted to open a PayPal and a Bill Me Later account under his name and address. But both companies denied "his" request because each company's fraud alert flagged the applications for the lack of their ability to identify his personal information. The resident has no idea who would do this. Nervous wreak April 29 – It was very early on a quiet Sunday morning around Belmont Police Headquarters on the corner of Concord Avenue and Pleasant Street. Then, at a quarter past three, someone informed officers that they were needed for a hit and run that just occurred. Such a request is not unusual but the location was: the Police Station's own parking lot! A green…

The flue is what now? April 23 – At 12:47 p.m., Engine 1, Ladder 1 and a command car were dispatched to a two-family on Gilbert Road for reports that alarms were sounding in house due to some smoke incident. On arrival, the crew from Engine 1 investigated and found that smoke was indeed inside the house. That condition usually happens when someone builds a fire and forgets to open the fireplace flue. A firefighter opened the flue and the dwelling was ventilated. Gas in Waverley April 25 – At 2:41 p.m., Engine 2 was sent to the corner of Church Street and Trapelo Road for what the fire department is calling an "ongoing issue": an outdoor gas leak. When they crews arrived, they smelled an odor of natural gas in the street and readings from …
