Nathaniel Meyer conducting the 5th Symphony at 2 p.m. at the Beech Street Center.
Nathaniel Meyer was thinking – as everyone who had heard the news – about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and how the heartbreaking event connects to the work he is conducting Saturday afternoon, Dec. 29: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony. "[The fifth symphony] is a piece that deals with the movement of the human spirit from a place of tragedy to a place of triumph. I didn't really know that this piece would take on such meaning for me but we all heard about the [shooting] in Connecticut so there is no way I can play this piece without thinking about about those events," said Meyer. "I can't speak for everyone but [the tragic event] will definitely be on my mind," said Meyer. Meyer will conduct the Belmont Festival …

Second-oldest men's chorus in the US will present a free concert at 7 p.m. at the Beech Street Center tonight.

Founded in 1871, the chorus – 35 Boston-area business and professional men – will sing selections of patriotic tunes, sea shanties, love songs and a medley from the musical “Carosel” at the town's senior center at 266 Beech St. Led by 90-year-old Florence (Flossie) Dunn, who has been involved with the group since 1955, the 130-plus year old organization – its history includes in 1874 singing at the funeral services of Sen. Finishes first in 'Ladies 70 and older' on July 4th road race.

Wednesday, July 11, 2012
There is something uncommon about Janice Knight. The Common Street resident and a Beech Street Center regular has become a rather special senior athlete. Knight won a gold medal at the 4th of July Mattapoisett 5-Mile Road Race, in the category of "Ladies 70 and older." Her total time was 67.1 minutes, a 13.12 minute per mile pace which Knight says is "not bad for an old crone on a hot and humid day!" Knight has used a variety of COA fitness programs, said Nava Niv-Vogel, director of the Belmont Council on Aging, who hopes that Knight's accomplishment provides encouragement to others to join the Center's fitness programs and explore the possibilities of what they can accomplish.

Just your average election day ... with one big exception.
Precincts 3 and 5 located in the Beech Street Center is usually a sedate polling location with the bulk of voters in early and late with workers and the police detail trying not to be too bored. And that routine should be no different tomorrow, with one little exception: Mitt's coming to vote. Not that a sighting of former Massachusetts Governor Romney and his wife, Ann, is all that usual on election days past. Ellen Cushman, Belmont's town clerk, said the Romney's and their eldest son, Tag, are pretty faithful voters in national, state and town elections. But this time – Romney's campaign says the South Cottage Road resident and his wife will be arriving at the Center sometime around 5:15 p.m. – should be a bit different then past trips …
