Belmont High's Prom Goers Strut Their Stuff

The Junior/Senior Prom starts off with the annual Grand Promenade Friday afternoon.

It was a warm and sunny afternoon, perfect weather for the 400 or so students and guests who showed up in gowns, dresses, tuxes and suits at Belmont High School Friday, May 17, for the annual Grand Promenade of those attending the school's Junior/Senior Prom to be held that night at the Westin Hotel in Boston. The school's auditorium was filled with parents, fellow students and friends of the attendees to watch the attendees strut across the stage for their moment in the spotlight.  Editor's note: All photos by Lisa Gibalerio. Belmont Unemployment Rate Remains Steady in April

While state joblessness spiked since October, Belmont's unemployment has dipped.

After hitting a 12-month high in October, the number of unemployed Belmont residents has decreased in the past seven months to where the rate is approximately half the national level. According to the state's Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, more than 100 residents found employment since October 2012 as the number of the unemployed in Belmont fell to 512 residents in April, a 3.8 percent non-seasonally adjusted rate.  The town's unemployment rate dipped from 4.6 percent last October when 629 residents were without work. The 3.8 percent rate is below the 6.8 percent jobless rate for the state in April and the US's 7.8 percent. Over the same time period, the state's unemployment rate has spiked from 6.1 to 6.8 percent. …

Belmont Fire Chief Frizzell Earns Accreditation From Fire Services Commission

Accreditation based on education, training and experience in areas relevant to serving as a fire chief.

The Massachusetts Fire Service Commission granted accreditation to Belmont Fire Chief David Frizzell on May 1, after he demonstrated the required fire service experience, education and certifications for accreditation. This accreditation is granted through the Massachusetts Fire Service Commission, a gubernatorial appointed board that has established a process for uniform credentialing for fire chiefs. “I am dedicated to providing the highest level of service to Belmont and have worked hard to continue my education and experience to bring a high level of professionalism to this position. The Week of Review: Cushing Village, Wellington Milestones

The events that occurred in the past week in Belmont.

The Belmont Planning Board OKs Cushing Village massing and height which the Planning Board calls a "milestone" while the developer believes he can begin construction "this summer."  At an earlier Planning Board meeting, the Wellington School Building Committee receive its final occupancy notice after it made efforts to quiet the noise coming from the building that was effecting the quality of life of a handful of homeowners.  Former state trooper from Belmont was convicted of extortion in threats he made to a local bookie. Belmont Garden Club's Plant Sale Today

Head over to the Lions Club for the best in plantings for the season.

It's still time to buy the best in plants that Belmont can supply. The Belmont Garden Club will be holding their annual Perennial Plant Sale at the foot of the Belmont Lions Club, at 1 Common St. at the corner of Concord Avenue and the Belmont commuter rail station.  Each of the Perennials are marked according to the degree of sun or shade needed.  The sale will coincide with Belmont Town Day and runs from 9 a.m. to noon All proceeds benefit BGC's community plantings and other activities.

Joey’s Park Party After Town Day Today

Burgers and dogs, music and fun at the picnic from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Cap off Belmont Town Day today, May 18 with a picnic and party at Joey’s Park.    The event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. will feature food, music, photos and a chance to view an over-sized rendering of the new Joey’s Park playground. “Everyone loves a party and everyone loves Joey’s Park,” says Ellen Schreiber, Friends of Joey’s Park co-chair and sponsor of the party. “This is a chance to celebrate 24 years of a magical community playground as we get ready to build the new Joey’s Park next October,” she said. Belmont Town Day Saturday

Lots of stuff to do and eat tomorrow morning and afternoon.

Milestone: Belmont Planning Board OKs Cushing Village 'Envelope'

Construction could begin this summer after board gives tacit approval of project's massing and height.

It may have just been a straw vote among the four Belmont Planning Board members at its Thursday meeting on May 16, but the unanimous tally all but assures the long-stalled Cushing Village retail and residential development will receive a special permit in the next 30 to 60 days that would allow construction of the 185,000 square foot project to begin. "This is a milestone. This vote will move the project forward," said Planning Board Chair Sami Baghdady after he and the members symbolically approved the project's height and mass, creating an "envelope" that allows the developer and abutters an assurance of a specific size and boundary to the adjacent neighborhood.  "We're ready to go," said Chris Starr, the president of the development …
