Beer and sports comes through for the victims of last month's terror attack.
The two stores are neighbors in Belmont Center, sharing a common wall. Champions Sporting Goods, 53 Leonard St., is known by generations of athletes and their parents in Belmont as the go-to shop for all things sports and being the official "cut through" from the Center to the parking lots out back. Craft Beer Cellar, 51 Leonard St., is the "new" kid on the block, a wonderland of artisan beers from local and regional brewers, attracting townies and those who travel hours to sample the unique inventory. And after the terrible events at the Boston Marathon on April 15, the stores with the common wall would put their efforts into the common cause of helping those directly impacted by the acts of two desperate brothers. Days after the …

Laying of water mains first part of reconstruction and parking changes for Belmont's business hub.
Beginning today and lasting for the next 16 weeks, Belmont Center's Leonard Street will be the epicenter for one of the most extensive water main replacement projects in the center's history. The work will replace century-old water pipes in preparation for the reconstruction of Belmont Center roadways and parking in 2014, according to DPW Director Peter Castanino earlier this year. But due to the Center's nature of being the business "hub" of Belmont, the Public Works Department will be limiting actively digging up the center from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. During the night, traffic will be limited to one-lane. Once the work is complete, Belmont can then approach the state for a grant to help pay for the Center's new …

Italian in Cushing Square with a South End Mexican eatery opening a sister location in the Center.
A pair of 60-plus seat restaurants – an Italian eatery from the successful chef/owner of Waltham's La Campania and a sister location of a top-rated Mexican restaurant in the South End – are proposing to open this year in Belmont, adding to the town's growing reputation as a destination location for good dining. Located in the location once occupied by a shoe repair shop at 436 Common St. in Cushing Square, La Maione Pizzeria Con Cucina will be an Italian eatery focusing on Neapolitan-style pizza and southern Italian "soul food" from chef John Maione who has owned La Campania on Main Street for more than a decade. Over in Belmont Center, El Centro Mexican Restaurant will be the suburban outpost of the South End-based standout located on …

Eight-to-ten weeks to replace hundred-year-old water pipes in preparation of the Center's rehabilitation.
Spring will be coming to Belmont Center on the back of a trench-digging excavator as the Belmont Department of Public Works released its blueprint to replace the water mains on Belmont Center's Leonard Street and Concord Avenue at Monday's Board of Selectmen meeting, Jan. 28. Public Works crews will begin ripping up the Center's main thoroughfare beginning in April as it replaces century-old water pipes in preparation for the reconstruction of Belmont Center roadways and parking in 2014, according to DPW Director Peter Castanino. Once the work is complete, Belmont can then approach the state for a grant to help pay for the Center's new streets and sidewalks, significantly reducing town expenditures for the project. After the water pipes…

Town Treasurer predicts no impact unless the site stays shut for a while.
While Belmont Center – and the town – will be losing its largest retail presence when Macy's closes its doors for the final time in less than two months, there will be no impact on tax revenue coming into the town's coffers in the short term, said Belmont's chief tax collector. "Just like any property, it doesn't matter if it's occupied or empty, the landlord (Kevin Foley, the manager of Locatelli Properties) is responsible for paying the tax," said Floyd Carman, Belmont's Town Treasurer. In fact, it will be the state that will feel the pinch with a drop in sales revenues, said Carman. He said since Macy's did not have an in-store restaurant or cafe – which the Filene's that occupied the site before the transfer to the Macy's name once …

What will the closing of Macy's mean to Belmont; what do you see taking its place.
After a decade of rumors that it would be closing, that day finally came as Macy's announced today that it is closing the Belmont Center store after 71 years in Belmont Center. The store, up until 2006 it was a Filene's Department Store, was the retail anchor for the town's largest retail center, bringing in customers from surrounding towns who would shop in the Center's other stores. But with its closing comes opportunities for one or several businesses to replace the department store which was once the heart of Belmont's retail community. Add your comments about Macy's and Filene's as well as envisioning what should replace the iconic department store.

After anchoring retail in Belmont Center for more than 70 years, Macy's Inc. announced today, Jan. 3 it will be closing its Belmont store. Rumored to be on of verge of shutting down for more than a decade due to its size – one of the smallest of the 800 Macy's in the continential US at 75,000 square-feet (the Macy's at the nearby Burlington Mall is 255,000 square feet) – and location, that official word came in a press release issued this morning in which the company announced a number of closing and expansions across the country. Belmont has two Zipcars in Belmont Center among other nearby communities.
New Jersey-based Avis Budget Group announced today it has acquired the Zipcar car sharing company for approximately $500 million. Avis agreed to purchase Cambridge's Zipcar for $12.25 per share, according to a press release issued today by Zipcar. The $12.25 is a 49 percent premium over the shares' closing price on Dec. 31. The board of directors for both companies unanimously approved the acquisition and the deal is expected to close sometime this spring. Zipcar has two car sharing spots behind the fire station in Belmont Center and across from Macy's. Belmont – which has more then 200 Zipcar members – welcomed Zipcar in June 2011 after the Board of Selectmen accepted a recommendation from the town's Energy Committee to allow the …

An impromptu idea resulted in three dozen carolers singing and enjoying the season.
It was nearing 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15 and there was only Amanda Rettig, her son and mother-in-law standing beside the Christmas tree in Belmont Center. But soon came a family from Newton, then some from Belmont. A steady number of folks, mostly families with small children in strollers or riding on the shoulders of their parents arrived. Finally, more than two dozen – with more on the way – Rettig, who organized the event on-line and through word of mouth, welcomed everyone to the first ... by the way, what is it being called? "This isn't a formal event. It's a gathering to sing carols," said the Belmont resident who use to go caroling as a child in her hometown in Connecticut, commenting as her husband and other child arrived with …
