Train schedule nixes the opportunity to see a bit a Hollywood come to Belmont.
No Robert Downey Jr. No Robert Duval. No award-winning cinematographer. Not even a lowly extra will be coming to Belmont this summer. What appeared to be summer days of celebrity sightings, hoards of autograph hounds roaming the streets and an army of trucks and trailers invading the streets of Belmont has vanished as quickly as a Penn and Teller card trick as the production team seeking to film scenes for a 2014 Downey Jr. movie at the former Municipal Light Department building decided to pull out of the "Town of Homes" rather than compete against the roar of the commuter rail line that passes just yards by the site. "It was the trains that was the deal breaker," said the town's Building Services manager, Kevin Looney, Monday morning, …

After hearing concerns, Board will favor single-family homes at Belmont Hill site, for now.
When nearly 70 people show up to attend a Selectmen's meeting in mid-summer, something has caught the attention of Belmont residents. And the overwhelming negative reaction by homeowners of a Belmont Hill neighborhood to word that a out-of-state medical facilities developer was interested in purchasing a town-owned parcel adjacent to Belmont Country Club with access off Greensbrook Way sent a clear message to the Belmont Board of Selectmen at its Wednesday night meeting, Aug. 15. Speakers – including a slew of attorneys and the star power coming from a member of the Romney family – convinced the board to rework a proposed development blueprint favoring single-family homes and expanding the time frame for developers to bid for the 300,000 …

Main structure to be replaced with new clubhouse, pool.
Long-anticipated but with a vague time line, the first concrete steps on Belmont Country Club's reported $20 million renovation of its facilities has come to light. On Jan. 15, 2012, the clubhouse at 181 Winter St. – which was renovated within the past decade for a reported $7 million – will be razed as the construction project begins in earnest. In its place will rise a new 55,000 sq.-ft. clubhouse with several amenities such as a modern exercise club in addition to a new pool facility with its own cabana building. While the clubhouse will be gone, the golf course and the club will continue operating. CBT Architects of Boston and commercial interior designer Frank Nicholson, Inc. will be creating a modern design for the Club, which has …

US Sen. Brown tells Watertown Belmont Chamber only bipartisan bills can pass; need of civility.
US Sen. Scott Brown hasn't been happy at work. "I've been disgusted lately to the complete breakdown of civility in Washington," said Brown at a breakfast meeting hosted by the Watertown Belmont Chamber of Commerce at the Belmont Country Club Wednesday, Sept. 28. The state's junior senator said that "despite a financial emergency and real challenges ahead of us," too many representatives from both sides of the aisle have been playing politics rather then focusing on the job at hand. In fact, Brown's meeting with the chamber had to be pushed back from a summer date due to the debt ceiling crisis that gripped the nation's capital three months ago. Brown said that despite a national debt that has risen from $11.5 billion when he arrived to …

The Belmont High golf team fell to Burlington Tuesday to remain one win shy of clinching a postseason appearance.
The Belmont High golf team dropped a close match to Burlington, 37-35, Tuesday on their home course, the Belmont Country Club. However, despite the loss, the Marauders are still in good shape to qualify for their state sectional tournament, as, at 6-3, they only need one more win with five matches remaining. “It was a tough loss,” Belmont coach Jeff Shea said. “I thought we had been playing well in practice, but it just didn’t translate to the golf course today. Next week is going to be big for us.” After getting the remainder of this week off, the Marauders will have four matches next week – Watertown on Monday, Lexington on Tuesday, Andover on Wednesday and Arlington on Thursday. The team will then finish the regular season at Melrose …

Massachusett's junior senator will be at the Belmont Country Club on Sept. 28.
Sen. Scott Brown will speak at a breakfast meeting at the Belmont Country Club sponsored by the Watertown/Belmont Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 28. The Republican senator will speak at the event sponsored by Watertown Savings Bank, said Brenda Fanara the chamber's executive director. “We are honored and privileged to have a United States Senator speaking to our chamber about the current environment,” Fanara said in a release. Brown won a special election to fill the seat fomerly occupied by the late-Ted Kennedy, and he serves on the Senate Committee on Armed Services, the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. The breakfast …

Funny, if the Romneys were to profit from this they would not have voiced all those concerns and said "Belmont is perfect because the old people can look out and see kids and it is a quiet area for them to spend their last days."   more ›
