They Work At Night: Belmont Center Road Work Starts Monday

Laying of water mains first part of reconstruction and parking changes for Belmont's business hub.

Beginning today and lasting for the next 16 weeks, Belmont Center's Leonard Street will be the epicenter for one of the most extensive water main replacement projects in the center's history.  The work will replace century-old water pipes in preparation for the reconstruction of Belmont Center roadways and parking in 2014, according to DPW Director Peter Castanino earlier this year. But due to the Center's nature of being the business "hub" of Belmont, the Public Works Department will be limiting actively digging up the center from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. During the night, traffic will be limited to one-lane.  Once the work is complete, Belmont can then approach the state for a grant to help pay for the Center's new …

Belmont Trash Collection on Regular Schedule

Have your barrels and containers ready on the same ol' pick-up days.

Just because there's a four-foot snow drift in front of your house doesn't mean you can't put your trash barrels out to be picked up. Belmont's Department of Public Works want to remind residents that despite 27 inches of snow from Friday and Saturday's blizzard, curbside trash collection is operating on its regular schedule. Any questions related to this can be directed to the DPW at 617-993-2680.

Where you shoveled for the walkway, driveway, or path for the mailman and others. Or, if you choose, don't put them out this time. Good luck. At least we don't have those huge barrels like Watertown does.   more ›

Up All Night: Belmont Center Roadwork Will Be Under the Stars

Eight-to-ten weeks to replace hundred-year-old water pipes in preparation of the Center's rehabilitation.

Spring will be coming to Belmont Center on the back of a trench-digging excavator as the Belmont Department of Public Works released its blueprint to replace the water mains on Belmont Center's Leonard Street and Concord Avenue at Monday's Board of Selectmen meeting, Jan. 28.  Public Works crews will begin ripping up the Center's main thoroughfare beginning in April as it replaces century-old water pipes in preparation for the reconstruction of Belmont Center roadways and parking in 2014, according to DPW Director Peter Castanino. Once the work is complete, Belmont can then approach the state for a grant to help pay for the Center's new streets and sidewalks, significantly reducing town expenditures for the project.   After the water pipes…

Public Meeting on Future of Underwood Pool Jan. 31

Meet the consultant and discuss what should happen to Belmont's historic swimming pool.

What should happen to the problematic Underwood Pool, the historic swimming pool that has been used by town residents for the past 100 years?  Rebuild it? Build a new pool where the Underwood Playground is currently located? Or do nothing? In less than a fortnight, Belmont residents and abutters will have the chance to have their say in the matter as Belmont's Department of Public Works and consultant, Bargmann, Hendrie + Arohetype – which was hired to produce a feasibility study – will be hosting a public meeting on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. in the Belmont Public Library's Assembly Room at 336 Concord Avenue. The purpose of the meeting is to provide an overview of the process including timelines for the development of a "Feasibility and…

Belmont Rides Out Sandy's Windy and Wet Arrival

More than 50 trees fell with more than a dozen of trees remain on residential homes.

The residents along Orchard Street near the intersection of Common Street thought themselves quite fortunate when around noon Monday, Oct. 29 at the beginning of the gale force winds from Hurricane Sandy, a tall and large evergreen tree truck snapped near its base but missed landing onto neighboring houses or cars. "We all went inside thinking how lucky we were. Then, at 3:30 p.m. we heard this 'boom'," said a local resident the next day. Outside, a second large tree slammed into overhanging electrical and phone wires bringing the light pole crashing onto the street, creating a barrier of branches, trunk, poles and live wires across Orchard. Eighteen hours later, as the sun began peeking out for the first time in two days, neighbors came …

If A Tree Falls in Belmont, It Depends If the Town Will Remove It

Whether the town's tree service hauls away arbor damage depends whose it is.

With nearly as many trees as residents and an extensive annual program to plant them around down, it's no wonder that Belmont is annually named a Tree City USA Community by the Arbor Day Foundation. So after a storm, the most damage caused by storms and wind are trees toppling over and branches falling onto property and public ways. But according to Belmont's Public Works Director Peter Castanino, not all trees damaged or fallen by Hurricane Sandy on Monday, Oct. 29, will be taken away or chopped up on the town's dime. To report a town shade tree that has fallen or heavy branches from the tree in public roadways, call the Belmont DPW at 617-993-2680. Castanino said DPW's Highway Division personnel and the two crews from the town's tree …

Moving Underwood Pool Could Remove New Library Hurdle

Still yet vetted, plan on relocating pool could free incinerator to be sold, adding a vital playing field for school and town and freeing land for a new town library.

It all began when Department of Public Works Director Peter Castinino attended the annual Town Meeting two months ago. There are so many capital needs in town, he said. Maybe there is a way to solve a few all at once. After attending a meeting concerning the proposed town library and talking with those running the newly created Community Preservation Committee, he took a walk to the Underwood Playground and looked over the historic municipal pool. In mid-June, he brought Board of Selectmen Chairman Mark Paolillo to the same small bluff where they could see the 100-year-old pool, the Belmont Public Library and the Belmont High School playing fields across Concord Avenue in a single view. By relocating the historic Underwood Pool nearly 25 …

This idea is unlikely to work. 1. Even combined, the current site of the pool + the sunken area is not large enough for a regulation soccer field -- it looks to big enough for only a 2/3-sized field. 2. There will still be a net loss of open space, as a pool is much larger than the current playground. Abutters will not be thrilled to have a pool next door. 3. It's gotta be expensive to build a …   more ›

Underwood Pool's Future at Selectmen on Monday

Department of Public Works to discuss facility's condition, plans to modernize historic site.

In between signing the warrant for the September state primary election and granting a business license to a hip hybrid breakfast/mexicana cafe on Trapelo Road, next week the Belmont Board of Selectmen will dip their toes into the increasingly hot water of the historic Underwood Pool. At its scheduled meeting on Monday, July 2 at 7 p.m., the three members board will hear from Belmont Department of Public Works Director Peter Castinino as he presents an updated version of a memo he wrote six years ago on the ongoing engineering, structural and maintenance issues facing the pool. Those same concerns pertaining to safety and the pool's out-dated construction were cited by the Belmont Health Department this month when it refused to grant a …

Diving Back In? Town List Conditions for Return of Pool Tradition

Talks including DPW and Rec Department could lead way back for Underwood board.

After nearly a week of increasing public fall out from a decision to remove the diving board and halt diving at Belmont's century old Underwood Pool, talks are underway between town departments on the possible return of one of the town's long-standing recreational traditions. Belmont's Health Department Director Stefan Russakow held discussions with Department of Public Works Director Peter Castinino and the town's Recreation Department as of Wednesday, June 27, to begin acting on determining the feasibility of creating a "safer" Underwood Pool that could allow for the return of diving. "I have begun those discussions and that's where we stand," Russakow told Belmont Patch Wednesday, June 27. Russakow's department determined at its annual …

Last Days to Purchase Rain Barrels Through Town

Efficient way to have water at-the-ready for gardening.

Sustainable Belmont and the Belmont DPW have teamed up again this year to offer Belmont residents discounted rain barrels but time is running out on this offer. The annual program ends on Monday, June 25. If you've been thinking about adding one to your garden, now's the time to act. Water in Belmont costs about 2.5 cents a gallon including sewer fees and the rates are going up as reported in Belmont Patch. Assuming the barrel is replenished ten times a year – 600 gallons – it could save $15 per year off your water bill. So it saves money. They also reduce flooding. Each barrel holds 60 gallons of water and you can easily link two together. Turn a puddle in your yard into a giant watering can. And plants and flowers prefer unchlorinated …
