Powering Up Belmont's Cushing Village On Energy Committee's Mind

Committee co-chairman list recommendations to increase sustainability of proposed project.

With the Belmont Planning Board deciding at its previous meeting to review other aspects of the proposed Cushing Village development, the focus of the three-building complex situated on three blocks in the heart of Cushing Square turned on recommendations to make the residential and retail proposal as energy and environmentally friendly as possible According to Belmont Energy Committee Chairman Roger Colton, developer Chris Starr and his development team, Smith Legacy Partners, should view the recommendations of his and other sustainability proponents are making as a chance to produce a more profitable and sound project.  "I urge both the Planning Board and the Cushing Village Development Team tonight to view the recommendations I have …

Better Homes Belmont Program Breaks State Energy Audit Record

Only 120 spots left for fuel oil-heated homes to be tested. Homeowners and renters still have time to register.

Belmont is on track to setting a new record for signing up more homes as a percent of total homes in the community to receive no cost energy assessments than any other city or town in Massachusetts. The Better Homes Belmont program has signed up more than 550 homes in just five months representing nine percent of the town’s total homes. “The response has been phenomenal and speaks to the pent up demand in Belmont for good energy efficiency services, the real savings to be had, and the wonderful contractors that are doing the work.” said Belmont Energy Committee Co-Chairman Ian Todreas. Belmont homeowners are getting not just any ordinary home energy assessment. The Better Homes Belmont program combines scans of the exterior walls of homes …

January 22: For those of you who have not yet taken advantage of the Better Homes Belmont energy efficiency audits, you may wish to note the following news that was released last Friday (Jan 18) by the U.S. Department of Energy: "As much colder temperatures move into the U.S. Northeast next week, a special supplement released today by the U.S. Energy Information Administration looks at how …   more ›

School Solar Power Plan Called Environmental, Cash Friendly

Initiative would have panels on roofs by September, saving schools millions over next decade.

If all goes to plan, student arriving for the first day of school this September will be greeted with solar panels layered on Belmont schools roofs, providing the town with environmentally-positive energy and the school department with millions of dollars in savings over the next decade. And the beauty of the project concocted by the Belmont Solar Initiative is it would not cost Belmont a penny in capital while allowing the schools to keep approximately $2.6 million. The plan to generate nearly a million-and-a-half kilowatt hour of energy annually from the town's six schools – the High School, Chenery Middle School and the four elementary schools – was presented to the Belmont School Committee Tuesday night, Jan. 24, by longtime …

Residents Rain on Planning Board's Solar Power By-law

Question reasonableness of limited restrictions; aesthetics or carbon footprint on center stage.

Members of a Belmont town committee and residents concerned with a maiden attempt by the Belmont Planning Board to place limited restrictions on the installation of solar panels are seeking to stop the measure from coming before January's Special Town Meeting. In an e-mail dated Nov. 14 and presented to the board for its Tuesday, Nov. 15 meeting in Town Hall, Roger Colton, co-chairman of the town’s Energy Committee, said that the language in the Planning Board's proposed "Solar Power Generation By-law Zoning Amendment" is "unacceptable as written." Despite Colton's and others objections, the Planning Board is forging ahead with amending an existing by-law to regulate how solar energy structures can be installed on homes and businesses. But…

I'd really like to see the speculative "eyesore" complaints be done away with. It's ironic that such complaints would come from residents that live in a comparatively unsightly town that's tightly packed with tri-deckers sitting atop minuscule parcels of lawn. That doesn't bother anyone? Their arbitrarily acquired aesthetic preferences should never outweigh environmentally beneficial and …   more ›

Question of the Day: Ready to Plug Solar into Your House?

We want you opinion.

Tonight, the Belmont Energy Committee will be holding a presentation by several private firms who are hoping to place solar panels on residential homes in Belmont, in some incidents at no cost to the homeowner. The 7:30 p.m. meeting on the second floor of Town Hall in the auditorium is the result of changes made this year by the Belmont Municipal Light Department allowing firms to come into town to set up systems which homeowners can reduce their dependency of the electrical power grid. Meeting attendees will learn about inverters, tilt angles and net metering from solar power firms who are willing to trade tax credits for the insallation of solar PV panels for residential homeowners lucky enough to have 2,500 square feet of an unshaded …

Sheesh. I guess living in Belmont (as I have since 1983 when it was merely convenient and not a luxury to live here) neither of you seems to be in tune with people who may not be able to afford either a Prius or solar panels with or without subsidies. We would certainly love to reduce our carbon footprint as well as our utility bill (which we can afford; thank you BMLD!). This is a great idea and…   more ›
