No Flu Spike in Belmont As Boston Declares Health Emergency

Boston's ten-fold increase in influenza cases this season not repeated in the Town of Homes.

While Boston Mayor Thomas Menino declared a health emergency Wednesday, Jan. 9 due to more than 700 reported cases in Boston in this flu season, Belmont's Health Department can count the number of residents hit by the ailment sweeping the country on two hands. While the Boston Public Health Commission report seeing 10 times the average number of cases through the entire last year, Belmont's Health Director Stefan Russakow is reporting nine documented flu cases in town. "There has not been a spike in flu cases here in town," reported Russakow in an email. But that does not mean residents should put down their guard in regards to taking preventive measures against the grippe, said Russakow. "Cases of influenza, or 'the Flu' continue to …

Officials Give Diving Supporters Little Room for Hope

Selectmen will hear at its July 16 meeting on any compromise

It hasn't been a good recreational year for Matt Russo and his kids. The Belmont dad first had to deal with the closing of the Butler Elementary School's playground where his children attend school. Then when summer came around, the family's favorite in town destination, the Underwood Pool, was deprived of one of its most prominent attractions: the diving board that has been a feature of the historic pool since it opened 100 years ago. "We were hit with a double whammy," Russo told the Monday, July 2, meeting of the Belmont Board of Selectmen which tackled the diving ban in addition to the on-going discussion on how much longer can the oldest outdoor municipal swimming pool can continue before it fails. "We are being told [the pool] was …

David Alper thinks we should "be giving 'chocolate and flowers' to the DPW staff for keeping the water clear of bacteria"? You have got to be kidding me. The fact that this very basic task is regarded by Alper's as extraordinary and worthy of praise shows that his performance expectations for DPW staff are shocking low. Also, can Franklin Tucker please inquire and report on why these 1998 (i.e 14…   more ›

Diving Back In? Town List Conditions for Return of Pool Tradition

Talks including DPW and Rec Department could lead way back for Underwood board.

After nearly a week of increasing public fall out from a decision to remove the diving board and halt diving at Belmont's century old Underwood Pool, talks are underway between town departments on the possible return of one of the town's long-standing recreational traditions. Belmont's Health Department Director Stefan Russakow held discussions with Department of Public Works Director Peter Castinino and the town's Recreation Department as of Wednesday, June 27, to begin acting on determining the feasibility of creating a "safer" Underwood Pool that could allow for the return of diving. "I have begun those discussions and that's where we stand," Russakow told Belmont Patch Wednesday, June 27. Russakow's department determined at its annual …

Underwood Diving Board Supporters Flock to Facebook

More than 500 "fans" back diving return to century old pool; will be "Outrage of the Day" on WRKO at noon.

Karl Ivester broke his neck diving into shallow water in 1999. "I am not an advocate for diving boards. I have not dove in any water in 13 years," said the long-time Belmont resident in an email interview. But when Ivester read on Belmont Patch Saturday, June 23, that the Belmont Health Department had removed the diving board at the town's Underwood Pool due to safety concerns, he took action. "It was clear that the pool was to be enjoyed by the children of Belmont and it was clear that a diving board was important to the Underwood," he said. But rather than make phone calls, sign a petition or go door-to-door to bring out support for the 100-year-old tradition, Ivester started up his computer and created a Facebook page. Dubbed "Save the …

What is it with this overriding need of government officials, great and small, to exercise a measure of control over every aspect of our lives? It isn't so much the act itself--in this case, the removal of a perfectly safe diving board; it's the thinking behind it, the mindset driving it.   more ›

After a Century, Underwood's Diving Board Gets Pulled In

Part of the municipal pool since 1912, Health Department cites safety concerns for banning the recreational standard.

There has been a diving board at the center of the Underwood Pool since the facility opened a century ago. Photos throughout the years show young people  in all styles of swimwear standing on the dock at the center of the pool where a long board was located. And last year, the center location was again crowded with children and young teens waiting to launch themselves off the end into the humid air to land head or feet first or in some contorted shape into the spring-fed waters. The board has also been an integral part of the "swim test," the long-standing tradition in which youngsters "graduate" to the deep end of the pool by demonstrating they can paddle around the edge of the adult section. The test's final obstacle was to swim to and …

My biggest surprise is that something like this happened before a major pool system failure. That is coming, and everyone knows it. Related, I heard Health officials say (several years ago) that the pool is very often on the edge of being shut for health reasons (bacteria, and worse, in the water). I get the impression they squinted enough to keep it open. Surely its largely from severely …   more ›

Mosquito-Borne Diseases Peak in September

Board of Health offers protective measures to take while outdoors.

September means back-to-school activities, including the resumption of school-related outdoor sports and more barbecues and other outdoor recreational activities while the weather remains warm and sunny. However, Belmont’s Board of Health is warning September is also an active time for mosquito-borne diseases, including West Nile virus (WNV) and eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus infection. The peak time for transmission of these viruses is generally in late summer and early fall. Many of the sports and recreational activities in which students are likely to participate occur during the evening and dusk hours, the time of the day when many kinds of mosquitoes are actively biting. Other mosquitoes feed during daylight hours. “We don’t …

Beat the Heat: Tips to Follow During Hot Weather

Belmont Health Department offers advice on staying safe during the coming heat wave.

Hot and humid summers are no surprise to residents of New England, but what is coming at the end of the week will stretch the limits of oppressiveness.  Coming in from the midwest and south that have been baking for the entire summer, high temperatures in the Boston area on Thursday, Friday and Saturday should be mostly in the 90s with a few areas topping the 100 degree mark. The higher humidity levels will make the heat index rise to a 100 to 115 degree range. So it is important for Belmont residents to have a plan to cope with the heat and humidity so they can make their day less uncomfortable. The Belmont Health Department urges residents to be extremely cautious on days where the temperature is above 90 degrees and offers some tips to …
