Boys eek out a win while girls' slow start sees them fall to Burlington.
It has been a rough season for Belmont Boys' Ice Hockey: the team is a bit small for many of the team's in what many have called the toughest public school league – Middlesex, Big School – in Massachusetts. So it was a chance for Belmont to shine when Brookline came to Skip Viglirolo Skating Rink to take on the host Maruaders Monday night, Jan. 30. Forty-five minutes later, six Belmont skaters – including five seniors – scored goals as the Marauders won a 6-1 blow out over the Warriors. Team scoring leader Brian Gramolini and Matt Madden scored within two and a half minutes of each other in the middle of the first period while Kevin Viglirolo and Chris Costello lit up the lamp six seconds apart within the first 1:30 of the second to seal…

Slow starts sink Marauders, hurting their drive to the tournament.
Belmont High School Boys' and Girls' Basketball teams could not over come slow starts and found themselves fighting for future playoff positions as they lost to host Lexington High Friday night, Jan. 20. Girls' Can't Complete Climb Back, Fall to Minutemen The Belmont High Girls' Hoops team is beginning to resemble a Katie Perry song: "Cause you're hot and you're cold." On the same week that they couldn't miss a shot in a win against archrival Watertown, the Marauders' could not hit a first half basket against struggling host Lexington. And despite several strong runs in the second half, Belmont could not overtake the Minutemen, falling 42-37. Belmont leaves Lexington at 4-8 while the Minutemen up their record to 5-6. Cat Costello and Kate…

Tanners' Littleton is big in OT as Woburn's Girls out muscle Marauders in tight Friday game.
It was an unlucky Friday, the 13th, for Belmont Hoopsters as the Woburn High School Boys' and Girls' Basketball teams left town with wins as the Tanners squeezed past the Marauders in the final minutes of each game. Littleton skies high in OT Woburn senior Matt Littleton score 8 of his game high 26 points in overtime, all while playing with four fouls, to lead Woburn (6-4) over host Belmont (5-4) Friday night, 70-65, as the Marauders could not comeback after being torched by 13 Tanner three pointers. Littleton hit two shots and four free throws in a two minute stretch after Belmont cut a 15-point, second half Tanner lead as Marauder John Dillon (who led Belmont with 21 points) scored three consecutive baskets to push the home team to a 59…

Marauders hold Winchester to four in the third to sprint away to their fifth victory.
Four Belmont High School hoopsters scored in double digits while Winchester's shooters went into a deep freeze in the second half, resulting in the Marauders easing to their fifth win of the season, defeating the Sachems, 52-39. Senior guards Sam Musler (16 points, 12 from beyond the 3-point arc) and Manny Cabral (half of his 12 coming from threes) along with senior forward captain John Dillion and center Tyaishawn Abdul-Aziz with 10 points each led the Marauder attack on their Friday night visit to Winchester High School. Winchester, with a big, strong front court of senior center Craig Fitzgerald (8 points) and co-captains Conor Dunleavy (7 points) and Ryan Murphy (3 points), kept the game close in the first 16 minutes, out-rebounding …

Arlington's downtown threes do in Marauders, handing them their first league loss.
You can say that Arlington's Boys' Basketball squad has a flair for style. During the first quarter against their game with Belmont this week, the Spy Ponders on the court sported an eye-popping color variety of shoes last seen in one of those 1980s hip-hop dance movies: neon blue (Junior Alex Kim), blood red (co-Capt. junior Tyler Sulivan), two-tone (senior center Paul Brooks), candy orange (co-Capt. senior Brandon Castro) and bubble gum pink (junior David Shin). More importantly, the Spy Ponders also had a flair for the three, knocking down buckets of buckets from beyond the 19' 9'' arc that kept Arlington close enough to the visiting Belmont so that a Castro's three with 35 seconds left was the margin of victory as Arlington (2-2, 2-2) …

Marauders' spread out scoring beats Raiders' as season gets underway.
Last year, Patrick McHugh was one of five outstanding starters on the Watertown High School Boys' Basketball team that won 17 games and played in the Div. 3 North Finals. But this year McHugh is the only one of the five to return and despite being one of the best players in the competative Middlesex League, expecting the 6'3" center to carry the Raiders during this rebuilding year is asking much. And Friday night's season opener for Watertown (0-1, 0-1) and Belmont High School (1-0, 1-0) proved that point, Despite scoring 32 points and making his presence felt on both the offensive and defensive boards, McHugh and Watertown fell to the Marauders' balanced attack, 57-54. "We need to improve but I can see that they are playing as a team," …
