Lexington's teams prove to be unwelcome guests as they send back Marauders.
Boys' Score Not Indicative of Effort It was Parent's Appreciation Day for Belmont High School Boys' Ice Hockey Saturday, Jan 13, at Belmont's Viglirolo Skating Rink. The railing along the raised deck was covered with heartfelt messages by players to their mothers and fathers. And Belmont players demonstrated to their parents an effort and grit that allowed the team to play with Lexington through the first two periods, trailing 3-1 (with freshman Brian Garrett scoring from fellow frosh David Bailey 29 seconds in to the second period), including stretches where Belmont's opportunistic offense was complementing a tight defense that frustrated the Lexington High School Minuteman forwards just as top-flight Reading High was left pondering. But …

McLaughlin scores a brace for Girls; Boys run into several very big Sachems.
You couldn't wipe the grin off Head Coach Mark Haley's face and it wasn't because it was frozen in place after spending two hours in North America's coldest indoor rink on Wednesday, Jan. 3. Nope, Haley's satisfaction was due to this season's first complete performance from the Belmont High School Girls Ice Hockey team (2-2-1) as the team overwhelmed Winchester High (4-2) in a comprehensive 3-0 shutout at Belmont's Viglirolo Rink. "They're getting there," said Haley of the team top-heavy with freshmen and sophomores, noting the team beat the Sachems in all facets of the game: goal tending, defense and offense. "It's certainly an improvement and you can see that they are playing at a higher level each time they're on the ice," said Haley…

Boys' fall to SpyPonders in shutout.
There are matches and games in all sports where an officials' aggressive call or pattern of judgements – or lack thereof – will bring the comment that the referees were no longer officiating the match but have inserting themselves into the game. And on the pair of goals scored against Belmont High School Girls' Ice Hockey team Saturday, Dec. 22 in their 2-1 loss to neighbors Arlington High, the refs' actions directly resulted in both tallies; one on a questionable call late in the game and the other on a less-than-skillful hip-check against Belmont's best defender. "We played a great game. But for some reason we always have trouble scoring against Arlington," said Mark Haley, Belmont's long-time head coach. "We need more shots and more …

Senior Cellucci nets wrap around with 10 ticks remaining; Boys' surrender each type of goal.
With the net empty at the host's end of the ice, Belmont High School Girls' Ice Hockey team was looking at the wrong end of a 3-2 score in their home opener against an undermanned Wakefield High School (who brought only 10 skaters to Belmont) on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at Viglirolo Skate Rink. As the seconds ticked down to less than 20 seconds remaining in the match, Belmont had one final rush up the ice with a chance to salvage the game. Following the puck into the Wakefield zone, senior co-captain Alexandra Cellucci caught up with the disk behind the Warrior goal. After the puck was kicked back to her behind the net, Cellucci quickly drove to the left side of goal while Wakefield's goalie, Katelyn Guarino, was expecting her on the right. …

Schools, players and community honor victims of Sandy Hook shooting tragedy.
The ice on the rink was chippy and grooved after the match between Belmont and Wakefield girls Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 20. But rather then leave the ice for the Zamboni to lay a clean sheet at the Viglirolo Skating Rink for the next game, the girls joined their male counterparts in a moment of remembrance of a national horror. Brought together by long-time Belmont Boys' Head Coach Dante Muzzioli, intermission between the match-up of Middlesex League rivals became a unifying event for the students to honor the 26 victims of the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that took place just five days earlier. "It is a great opportunity for the boys and girls to know that they are more than (hockey players)," said Muzzioli before …

Town institution decides to hang up the skates after 39 years.
Muzzi has decided to hang up his skates. After 39 years behind the bench at Belmont High School as an assistant and then head coach instructing thousands of athletes, Dante Muzzioli – better known by generations of players, parents and fans as Muzzi – has announced that this year will be his final season at Belmont High School. "It's time that someone new can help the program move forward," an emotional Muzzioli said in his familiar rough baritone. He said it will take a great amount of time and effort to assist in turning around a program that has seen interest wane in the past few years. This year, about 30 players have signed up for the coming season where just a few years ago that number was double. In a competitive environment as the…

Boys' Hockey losses out to Reading.
The penultimate week of the winter team season found Belmont teams make and end playoffs chances. Boys' D-flect high-flying Rockets to make playoffs Belmont Boys' Basketball came into Friday's, Feb. 10, game against the league-leading Reading Rockets needing a win at home to secure a place in the Division 2 North playoffs. The Marauders, riding a three game winning streak, also came into the rematch – having lost exactly one month previous by seven, 67-60 – with a plan to stymie the Rocket's running offense with an emphasis of putting a body on everyone. How well did the plan work? After seeing Reading push the lead to seven at 22-15 at 3:56 in the second quarter, the Rockets wouldn't score another point until 2:14 left in the third, …

Boys eek out a win while girls' slow start sees them fall to Burlington.
It has been a rough season for Belmont Boys' Ice Hockey: the team is a bit small for many of the team's in what many have called the toughest public school league – Middlesex, Big School – in Massachusetts. So it was a chance for Belmont to shine when Brookline came to Skip Viglirolo Skating Rink to take on the host Maruaders Monday night, Jan. 30. Forty-five minutes later, six Belmont skaters – including five seniors – scored goals as the Marauders won a 6-1 blow out over the Warriors. Team scoring leader Brian Gramolini and Matt Madden scored within two and a half minutes of each other in the middle of the first period while Kevin Viglirolo and Chris Costello lit up the lamp six seconds apart within the first 1:30 of the second to seal…

Marauders' lead the race to the first-ever Middlesex League, Big School championship.
What a week for Belmont High School Girls' Hockey. Eight days ago, longtime Head Coach Mark Haley's team was unranked and facing the number one (Woburn) and sixth ranked (Lexington) teams in Eastern Massachusetts with undefeated Westwood sandwiched in-between. A week later, Belmont (9-2-0) is now ranked seventh in the Boston Globe poll and lead the race for the Middlesex League, Big Schools crown, after dominating the Tanners (3-2) and Wolverines (4-0) and before beating a high-powered Minuteman team, 5-3, on a snowy Saturday afternoon, Jan. 21, at Belmont's Skip Viglirolo Skating Rink. "The girls were unbelievable," said Haley, now entering his third decade as the team's only head coach. Despite falling behind by a pair after less than …
