Three Belmont Swimmers Named All-Stars, Two Place in Division Championships

Senior Johnson and freshman Kelley lead the Marauders in the pool this post season.

Belmont High School Swimmers senior Ben Johnson, freshman Andrew Kelley, sophomore Thomas Zembowicz and senior diver Joe Tocci were all honored as Middlesex League all-stars for the season, last week.  Middlesex League all-stars which were determined based on performance at the League Meet. On Sunday, Feb. 17, first-year head coach Bobby Reardon brought several Belmont swimmers to the pool at Harvard University in Cambridge for the Division 2 State Swimming championships. Belmont scored 15 points at the meet's completion.  In his speciality, Kelley was the top freshman finishing 11th in the 100 yard (all distances in yards) backstroke in 56.90 seconds, a marked improvement over his seasonal best of 57.62. Belmont Boys' Swimmer, Diver Breaks Records in First Meet

Despite loss to Newton North, strong individual results highlight last Friday's opener.

It was the first meet of the season – a loss to host Newton North – for Belmont High School's Boys' Swimming team last Friday, Dec. 7, but already two swimmers and a relay have qualified on time to attend the Massachusetts State Championship meet in February.  Freshman Andrew Kelley joins a growing list of outstanding ninth grade athletes by qualifying for the 500 yard freestyle, finishing first in just under five minutes, 12 seconds, setting a new freshman mark for the distance. Led by Kelley, the Medley Relay team which includes Kevin Chen, Ben Johnson and Thomas Zembowicz qualified to swim in the states with a time of 1:51.97.
