Losses in final three games leave Marauders out of post season for the first time in five years.
After shutting out a good Reading High team at home on Oct. 18, Belmont Field Hockey needed a single win from their final three games of the season to return to the Div. 2 North playoffs. And with the Marauders visiting winless Woburn High which they easily defeated 2-1 at Harris Field earlier in the season, it was a solid bet that Belmont would be cheering through town on the bus from that game. But in sports, there is a matches where the better team, coming off a win or a series of wins against a good teams will have a let down and lose to a mediocre side. They are called a "trap" games. And the Marauders was caught in one at the most opportune time. Despite outshotting the Tanners by a 25 to 1 margin, (the final shot count was 50 by …

Marauders revenge earlier lose to Reading as team seeks playoffs.
A fortnight ago, Belmont High School Field Hockey Head Coach Jessica Smith had her doubts that her young team, then with a record of 4-5, could make another visit to the playoffs. "It will be tough, we have to win so many games," said Smith in early October. But in the past two weeks, Smith led her team to a 4-1 run including a 2-0 win over visiting Reading High School Thursday afternoon, Oct. 18, that has the Marauders one win away from returning to the playoffs for the third consecutive year. "This was a huge win," said Smith after the game, praising forward Michele Hayner who had a goal and assisted on the second scored by Catherine Moore. "Michelle continued to lead the play up the field. She took on three defenders to make the assist…

Marauders inch closer to post season with pretty goals, solid defense.
One down, two to go. Belmont High School's field hockey took one step closer to the post season as beautiful goals was paired with a solid defense to defeat Arlington High School, 3-1, Friday afternoon, Oct. 12, at Harris Field. The victory gives the Marauders a winning record (7-6) for the first time since they were 4-3 and leaves them two wins away – with five games remaining – from a certain playoff selection. After giving up an early goal to the SpyPonders' senior Meghan Wiseman in the second minute, Belmont began taking control of the game though the strength of its experienced back line defenders of Maddy Devine, Kendal Brown and Sydney Perkins. And example of the group's prowess was Arlington's inability to get a shot on goal from …

1-0 win puts Marauders at .500 for the season at 6-6-0.
One measure of how well a field hockey team is playing is counting the number of penalty corners they are awarded by the referees after a defending team is punished for an infraction inside the 16-yard scoring circle. Under the lights at home on Harris Field on Wednesday, Oct. 10, the Belmont High Field Hockey team was on top of their game, taking 21 corner over the course of game while surrendering a single corner to Burlington High School Red Devils. And that statistical dominance was evident in the play on the pitch as Belmont kept play in the Red Devils end of the field, allowing Burlington to cross the midfield line twice in the second half. But it took a tip in from increasing scoring threat Haley Fay with six minutes remaining in …

Strong showing vs. state champs leads to convincing win then a home loss.
It was an up and down week for Belmont High School Field Hockey Head Coach Jessica Smith's team. It began Saturday, Sept. 15 with her young team hosting Andover which won the Division I state championship two years running. "I would rather play tough teams like Andover than schedule a weak team that we know we can beat," said Smith. And Smith gave her team a strong challenge as Andover's collective skill and preparation found the Golden Warriors with a well-deserved 2-0 lead at the end of the first half. Yet the Mauraders upped their offensive pressure and were rewarded by playing Andover even in the second half, scoring once from Catherine Noone and the team was robbed of a second with a second left in the game by a superb diving save …

Three goals does the job for Paul Graham's Marauders.
Belmont High School Girls' Soccer Head Coach Paul Graham wasn't all that pleased with his team's effort in the first regular game of 2012, but it would have to do. "We'll get better when we start," Graham said in his customary gruff, but lovable, manner. "Well, we better or it's going to be a rough season," he said with a laugh. The Marauders season got underway with a workman win over a young Watertown (0-1-0) team, 3-0, at Belmont's Harris Field Thursday, Sept. 6, scoring three goals that were more functional than things of beauty. Junior Sara Ramsey scored twice in the first half off corners, the first just four minutes into the match followed by another 13 minutes later, while senior Charlotte Alexander's floater eluded the reach of …

Belmont's back line will anchor young team during rebuilding season.
After losing 13 seniors – including midfield stalwart Becca Moore who is playing for Division II Bentley University – from last year's Division II North Sectional finalist, Head Coach Jessica Smith knew this year was going to be a classical "rebuilding" year for Belmont High School Field Hockey. "They're so young so we'll find out how they handle playing together," said Smith a few weeks before during the first practices. And what better test to throw a collection of juniors and sophomores into than the state's most dominate field hockey team in the past five years? Last year's state champions, Watertown High School also lost a number of seniors that defeated Belmont in a memorable Sectional final including three-year star Erika Kelly – …

Three-sport defensive standout takes her skills to Division 2 school.
Belmont residents will not have to travel far to see Becca Moore's red hair holding forth on a field hockey pitch. The Belmont High School senior who anchored the midfield for the 16-win Marauders has signed a letter of intent to attend Bentley University in neighboring Waltham on a Field Hockey scholarship. Moore – who also starred on the state semi-finalist ice hockey team and currently plays for the girls' lacrosse team – was one of the dominate players for the field hockey team that lost only two regular season games, leading the defensive corp while being the key in providing the team's forwards with transition passes. The Division 2 Falcons returned to the conference playoffs this year and were ranked in the top ten in national …

Goal in final two minutes ends Marauders historic run in the Div. 2 North final in North Andover.
"Damn it." Belmont High School Field Hockey Head Coach Jessica Smith said what so many who have followed her team for the Marauders' historic season were thinking. Having just finished speaking to the girls moments after the final whistle was blown, Smith let the emotions of the day come out, a frustration born of how well her players fought for the game's 60 minutes against one of Massachusetts' best in windy and cold conditions in North Andover Saturday. In a match that saw the Marauders come back after conceding an early goal and take the play to defending state champions and unbeaten Watertown, Red Raider senior Lauren Giordano scooped in a rebound off Belmont senior Goalkeeper Shannon Reynolds with a minute and 48 second remaining in …

Goal in final two minutes ends Marauders historic run in MIAA tournament play.
In a heartbreaking loss, the Belmont High School Field Hockey team saw defending state champions and Middlesex League archrival Watertown High School score with less than two minutes to play to defeat the Marauders, 2-1, in the MIAA Division 2 North Championships today, Nov. 12, in North Andover. Watertown senior Lauren Giordano scooped in a rebound off Belmont senior Goalkeeper Shannon Reynolds with a minute and 48 second remaining in the second half after the Marauders held the edge in play for most of the final 30 minutes. "You will be the best team they meet in this entire tournament," said Belmont Head Coach Jessica Smith after the game. "You should be proud of that." Watertown's phenom Erika Kelly scored on Watertown's first shot …
