Watertown Ends Belmont's Thanksgiving Winning Streak with 28-7

The series is tied up 43-43-5 as Red Raiders stop Marauder's Thanksgiving run.

Watertown ended Belmont's seven-year winning streak in emphatic fashion as the Red Raiders defeated the Marauders, 28-7, at the annual Thanksgiving game held at Belmont's Harris Field, Thursday, Nov. 22.  Watertown's junior T.J. Hairston 21-yard circus catch with a Belmont defender draped on him to score Watertown's final touchdown with 5:01 remaining in the fourth quarter sealed the win for Red Raider's Head Coach John Cacace team. The victory allows Watertown (6-5) to end the season with a winning record for the second year running while Belmont (2-9) struggled through a season where they were away from home for eight games. After 91 games in the series, the record is all square: 43-43-5. Watertown's Cacace said he expected the Marauders…

Football's Big Away Win; Boys', Girls' Soccer Playoff Bound

Marauders go for two and beat Winchester; both soccer teams to play post-season.

Down two touchdowns after one quarter to hosts Winchester Saturday afternoon, Oct. 13, it had every appearance that Belmont High School's Football Marauders would be heading to another defeat in this season heavy-laden with away games. But Belmont's defense shut out the Sachems for the remainder of the game while producing seven turnovers which allowed all-purpose junior Brian Coutts to score 14 of Belmont's 15 points in the final quarter to pull out a 15-14 victory in the fading autumn sunshine. With senior Mike Richardson – back at quarterback which he started every game last year – and Coutts lining up in the backfield and as a receiver, Belmont allowed its defense to keep the team within reach before the offense came to life in the …

Belmont Football Let One Slip Away to Wakefield, 19-7

Ninety-four yard TD interception late in the fourth quarter hands Belmont the defeat.

It was what Friday Night football is all about. Trailing by six points with less than seven minutes to play in a steady downpour, Belmont High School football team had jumped on the back of senior running back Alex Nikolaidis to push undefeated Wakefield's back up against their own end zone. With fourth down and goal from the 7 yard line, Belmont lined up as the student section was screaming louder than anytime in the entire game. A touchdown and extra point would give the Marauders the lead late in their home opener and help turn around their 0-3 season. Belmont came out of the huddle and lined up three receivers to the right side. The ball was snapped to Marauder quarterback Brian Coutts who took a few steps to the right, then pivoted …

Belmont Football Goes Pink Tonight

Team and cheerleaders joins students and staff supporting breast cancer awareness.

Tonight's football matchup between host Belmont and Winchester will have destinctive hue not always associated with the rough-and-tumble of the gridiron. Pink. Maurader players will be wearing something pink – from socks, to wristbands and towels – while cheerleaders will have ribbons and articles on their uniforms in the color. And they will not be alone being pretty in pink: Belmont High School students will be wearing pink T-shirts and decorate Harris Field in the color. The reason for the reddish infusion is not to make a fashion statement but rather promote the cause of breast cancer awareness during October. Various groups this week began selling pink-related items during the school day: The Belmontian Club sold wristbands, hearts …

Marauders Worn Down by Melrose, 28-7, in Football Opener

Football starts under the Friday night lights as team shows more experience.

If one play indicated that this year’s edition of Belmont High School football will not be an easy mark for teams in the Middlesex League, it came midway through the second quarter of the team’s opener Friday night, Sept. 9, against Melrose. Belmont sophomore receiver Matt Rocha ventured over the middle to catch a 20-yard spiral from junior QB Mike Richardson only to be met by a charging Red Raider linebacker who lined him up and delivered a tremendous hit. Rocha was down on the ground for several minutes before slowly rising. But as he began walking off the field, the first-year starter began whipping up the crowd by pumping his arms in the air and yelling for his teammates to keep moving the ball. Despite a blow that was heard in every …
