Belmont Girls' Hoops Playoff Run Ends With Loss to North Andover

A tale of two halves as Marauders a bit too error prone to continue post season.

A promising first half was wasted as Belmont's error proned ways caught up with them as North Andover High's Scarlet Knights connected from long-range and on their second chances to defeat the Marauders, 61-34, in the semifinals of the Division 2 North Sectionals at Burlington High School Tuesday night, March 5.  "It was sad in the locker room that the run is over," said a dejected but philosophical Head Coach Melissa Hart as she was collecting her bags in the gym that had all but cleared out after the game. "Our kids gave it their all but I guess tournament experience showed tonight," she said. "North Andover was impressive sticking to their guns."  For the fourth game in a row, Belmont's all-star Katie Leinbach led the Marauders attack …

Belmont Girls' Hoops Take on North Andover Tuesday in Sectional Semis

The game tips off at Burlington High School at 7 p.m.

It will be like looking into a mirror Tuesday night as seventh-seed Belmont High School Girls' Basketball team will be heading to neutral-site Burlington High School to take on the sixth-seed North Andover Scarlet Knights in the semifinals of the Division 2 North Sectionals.  The game – tip off is scheduled at 7 p.m. – will see two teams that play a similar game and had comparable seasons.  Tuesday's game was set up after Head Coach Melissa Hart's Belmont (13-9) team doubled up second-ranked Boston Latin Academy, 55-26, Friday, while North Andover (14-8) came back from a deep hole to beat third-ranked hosts Arlington Catholic, 57-43.  Each team started the year on a roll – Belmont 7-1, North Andover 9-1 – before they both went on multi-…

Leinbach Leads Belmont Girls' Hoops Past Latin Academy, 55-26, Into Sectional Semis

Senior forward/guard carries team in season-best performance against the second-seed Dragons Friday night in Boston.

When senior co-captain Olivia Lyons – a reliable double digit scorer and rebounders – laid crying on the court at Boston Latin Academy Friday night, March 4, after twisting her ankle four seconds into the Belmont/Latin Academy game, Belmont High School Girls' Basketball Head Coach Melissa Hart said she would need to rely on her seniors to get the team past the number-two seed in the Division 2 North tournament quarterfinals. "It was up to [the seniors]," said Hart. And one senior stepped up big time. In one of the most impressive individual performances by a Belmont player in the post-season, guard/forward Katie Leinbach put the team on her back scoring a season-high 28 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to carry the Marauders to a hard-fought…

Belmont Girls' Hoops Trump Townies in Tourney Opener

Defense and speed provide the edge for Marauders as they meet Boston Latin Academy Friday.

It was worth the wait. Five years since the last time they hosted and won a tournament game, the 7th-ranked Belmont High School Girls' Basketball team opened their Division 2 North sectional playoff run with a convincing 69-31 victory over Charlestown High School Tuesday, Feb. 26, at a packed Wenner Field House. Belmont will travel to the heart of Boston's Dorchester neighborhood to take on the number-four seed Boston Latin Academy Dragons (14-5) Friday night, March 1, at 7 p.m. "I was expecting that we might have an edge with ball control but I just think our girls were ready for this game and they did it on the court," said Head Coach Melissa Hart. A dozen players scored a season high 69 points as Belmont poured in the first eight points…

At Home: Belmont Girls' Hoops Host Charlestown Tuesday in Playoff Opener

Marauders ranked 7th in Division 2 North Sectional playoffs.

The hard work demonstrated by the Belmont High School Girls' Basketball team in their final game of the season last Friday was rewarded as the Marauders will host their first round opener against Charlestown High School in the Division 2 North Sectional playoffs. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 26.  The contest marks the first time in five years since Belmont has both made the tournament and hosted a home game.  The home game was made possible after Head Coach Melissa Hart's team dominated 15-win Lexington, 63-46, on Feb. 15 at the Wenner to finish the season with 11 wins, pushing them into the 7th seed and giving them a home opener. Belmont's opponent, the Charlestown High Townies, recorded a 9-8 record this season in …

Belmont Girls' Hoops: Marauders Punish Lexington in Season Finale

Six seniors show the way as the Marauders ran the Minutemen out of the gym in convincing fashion.

It was Seniors Night Friday, Feb. 15 and the last time Katie Leinbach, Amari Bradshaw, Katlyn Noonan, Nayiri Ayanian, Olivia Lyons and Kate Zolner would suit up in their white home uniforms and step onto Belmont Wenner Field House's vinyl court as members of Belmont High School's Girls' Basketball team. In this, their final home game of their hoop careers, the six led their team in writing a statement for the season with a steely focus and determination against a highly-touted Lexington High School team that beat-up the Marauders, 58-45, a month earlier. Belmont was going to play their game and don't expect to beat them. Before the largest crowd of the season – including nearly two-dozen of Bradshaw's extended family wearing "Team Amari" T…

Girls' Hoops: Belmont Drains 'Ponders, One Win From Playoffs

Marauders will see the weak and strong next week as they need a single win in their final four games to make the big dance.

One more and then it's off to the dance. That's what's facing the Belmont High School Girls' Basketball team after it defeated neighboring Arlington High School, 50-33, Friday afternoon, Feb. 1, at Belmont's Wenner Field House; just win one of their final four games of the season and the Marauders will be heading back to the MIAA Division 2 North tournament for the first time in five years. You can watch the game on the Belmont Media Center. Check out the times and when the game will be "on demand."  Head Coach Melissa Hart's team used another big offensive performance by team co-captain and senior guard/forward Katie Leinbach (19 points), to raise their record to 9-7 for their second straight win after suffering a six consecutive-game …

Belmont Girls'Hoops End Six Game Slide By Caging the Polar Bears

Marauders need to win two of final five games to make the playoffs.

For the first time since Jan. 8, the Belmont High School Girls' Basketball team ended a game with smiles on their faces, winning in a blow out, 64-22, against the visitors from North (Worcester) High School.  For nearly a month, the Hoops team – that had started the season like gangbusters – was stuck in the deepest, muddiest ditch of defeat that a team could endure. Having come out of the gates 7-1, the team entered Wednesday's non-league game against the North High School Polar Bears at .500 after failing six times to see their playoff dreams turn into a nightmare. In the six games, they not just lost to top teams – state number 1 Reading and two-loss Lexington – but squads which would have appeared on paper not to be much of a treat …
