Belmont Girls' Basketball Hits Mid-Season Road Bump

Three game losing streak leaves Marauders' sputtering.

Head coach Melissa Hart said the Belmont High School Girls' Basketball 7-3 record at the midpoint of the season just wasn't good enough. It could, it should have be a whole lot better.  "No, I'm not satisfied with the record," Hart said. "When you win a bunch, it's hard to lose two back-to-back especially when you needed one," said Hart after the team fell to Woburn High School, 52-46, a week ago Tuesday, Jan. 15 for their first home loss of the season.  And it didn't get all that much better when Marauders were handed a 13 point loss away at Lexington Friday night, Jan. 18, 58-45, as the two guard attack of senior Cristyn Kajko (23 points) and freshman sensation Anna Kelly (21 points) nearly outscored Belmont on their own, leaving the …

Belmont Girls' Hoops Now 7-1, Head to #2 Reading Friday

Marauders never trailed vs. Winchester; will look to do the same Friday against the Rockets.

After dispatching Winchester High, 56-38, on Tuesday night, Jan. 8 for its seventh win (against a single loss) of the season, Belmont High School Girls' Hoopsters are looking forward to matching up at the end of the week with the best of the best. Head Coach Melissa Hart's team will head up Route 128 for a Friday night battle royal with undefeated Reading High School. That would be a Rocket team unbeaten since December ... of 2011.  Ranked number 2 in Eastern Massachusetts by the Boston Globe, the defending Div. 2 state champions (which went 25-0 last year) is led by senior superstar Olivia Healy, which ESPN Boston calls the best female basketball player in the state. The 5'10" forward, who has already committed to play Division 1 …

Belmont High Girls' Take Holiday Hoops Tourney

Seniors lead the way as Marauders unwind the Clockers.

The Girls' Basketball team will be bringing silverware back to Belmont High School for the New Year as the Marauders were crowned champions of the annual Ashland Holiday Tournament on Friday night, Dec 28. Belmont (5-1) took the title inching by host Ashland High School in the championship game, 55-54, after trailing by a dozen midway through the third quarter.  Belmont's defense, stellar all year, took over the game at that point with senior stalwart Olivia Lyons controlling the game under the basket as fellow senior Amari Bradshaw harassed the play makers for the Clockers (Ashland was once a center for watchmaking). In an eight minute stretch between the third and fourth quarter, Belmont outscored Ashland 22 to 10 with Bradshaw tying the…

Hoops: Boys' Fall Fast in First in Opener; Belmont Girls Sick After First Loss

Girls fall to 3-1 while boys seeking their first victory.

The scheduling gods did not look down favorably on Belmont High School Boys' Basketball team Friday night, Dec. 21 for its home opener. The team had come off two road losses seeking to change their fortunes with a victory in the happy confines of Wenner Field House. Facing the Marauders would a monster challenge as Belmont faced Wakefield High School, the overwhelming favorites to win the Middlesex League's Liberty Division (Big Schools), ranked in the Boston Globe Top Ten teams and led by junior guard Bruce Brown, predicted to be playing Division 1 college basketball in a couple of years.  Yet just how powerful a struggle it would be was realized as the Warroirs' quickness and deadly inside game allowed them to jump out to a 20 point lead…

Belmont Girls' Hoops Overwhelm Spartans; Flat Third Traps Boys

Girls' start 3-0 behind seniors; Boys' stayed close at Stoneham until after half time.

Instructions for a win on the basketball court: Eighteen points in the first quarter. Repeat. With 36 points in the bank at the half, Belmont High School Girls' Basketball cruised to a 3-0 early season record with a dominating performance against Stoneham High School (0-3) Tuesday night, Dec. 18, defeating the Spartans, 64-38, at Belmont's Wenner Field House. Belmont Head Coach Melissa Hart praised her four senior starters – co-captains Oliva Lyons, Katie Leinbach, Amari Bradshaw and Katie Zolner – in leading the way to the victories. "It shows when you have a group who have been playing together for the past four years," said Hart who noted the work of Bradshaw on the defensive end of the court as she shut down Stoneham's leading scorer …

Belmont Girls' Hoops Out Wrestle Watertown to Start Season

Lyons dominate boards as Leinbach cluch late as Marauders perfect at 2-0. Boys' can't get by Red Raiders.

Belmont High School Girls' Basketball Head Coach Melissa Hart remembers losing a close game to Watertown High School last year. It's better to be a the winning side of a close one, said Hart coming off the court Friday, Dec. 14. Led by senior forward and co-captain Olivia Lyons who secured her first double-double this season with 18 points and 13 recorded rebounds, the Marauders' defeated the Red Raiders, 41-34, at Belmont's Wenner Field House in the league opener for both teams which due to the physical nature of the game resembled a wrestling match at times. Hart noted that unlike many games last year when Belmont (2-0) could not come back after falling behind late in matches, the team was able to rally from three down (29-26) at the end…

Boys' Hoops in the Playoffs; Girls' Hockey Double Up Rockets

Boys' Hockey losses out to Reading.

The penultimate week of the winter team season found Belmont teams make and end playoffs chances. Boys' D-flect high-flying Rockets to make playoffs Belmont Boys' Basketball came into Friday's, Feb. 10, game against the league-leading Reading Rockets needing a win at home to secure a place in the Division 2 North playoffs. The Marauders, riding a three game winning streak, also came into the rematch – having lost exactly one month previous by seven, 67-60 – with a plan to stymie the Rocket's running offense with an emphasis of putting a body on everyone. How well did the plan work? After seeing Reading push the lead to seven at 22-15 at 3:56 in the second quarter, the Rockets wouldn't score another point until 2:14 left in the third, …

Belmont Hoopsters Shake Up A Winning Change

Marauder Boys' and Girls' go on to double digit victories over Winchester.

Shaking up their lineups proved to be the winning combination as Belmont's Girls' and Boys' Basketball each came away with double digits victories over visiting Winchester. Girls' find a W in renewed D Belmont Head Coach Melissa Hart shook up her starting lineup against Winchester by inserting junior Katlyn Noonan (4 points in the first quarter) and sophomore guard Gabrielle Joyal and was rewarded with a renewed committment to defense resulting in the Maruaders beating the Sachems, 57-39, at Belmont High School's Wenner Field House. Dillon, Musler Lead Marauders by Spy Ponders

A 20-point fourth quarter sees Girls' Basketball fall to Arlington.

Host Belmont Boys Hoops looked to a pair of veterans and a young outside sniper to beat neighbor Arlington to revenge an early season away loss and bring the team closer to sealing their bid for a postseason spot. While basketball is a team sport, in the first quarter, John Dillon was an unstoppable one-man force as the senior captain exploded for 14 of Belmont's 21 points including a pair of monster jams that sent the student contingency in the upper deck into delirium. Dillon's fast start allowed Belmont to stay in front early – leading 11-1 at one point – of the long-range bombing from the Spy Ponders, 21-13, after the end of the first quarter. After taking Dillon's best punch, Arlington got their sea legs back and led by first-game …

Boys' Hockey Rocks Brookline

Boys eek out a win while girls' slow start sees them fall to Burlington.

It has been a rough season for Belmont Boys' Ice Hockey: the team is a bit small for many of the team's in what many have called the toughest public school league – Middlesex, Big School – in Massachusetts.  So it was a chance for Belmont to shine when Brookline came to Skip Viglirolo Skating Rink to take on the host Maruaders Monday night, Jan. 30.  Forty-five minutes later, six Belmont skaters – including five seniors – scored goals as the Marauders won a 6-1 blow out over the Warriors. Team scoring leader Brian Gramolini and Matt Madden scored within two and a half minutes of each other in the middle of the first period while Kevin Viglirolo and Chris Costello lit up the lamp six seconds apart within the first 1:30 of the second to seal…
