Girls' Soccer Sectional champs receive what is becoming a school tradition: jackets with their accomplishment on the back.
It's been two months ago when the Belmont High School Girls' Soccer team upset Middlesex League-rival Wilmington High School, 1-0, to win the Div. 2 North Sectional title in Lynn. Since then, many of the teammates have migrated to other sports or are taking time away from athletics to concentrate on the daunting academic schedule and social scene Belmont High places on all its students. But the champions came together one more time in the school's Wenner Field House on Wednesday, Jan. 16 for what is a time-honored tradition at the school: receiving their championship jackets. Coaches Paul Graham and Stacie Marino called out names and presented each of the players their steel blue heavy-duty jackets with their names and numbers on the …

Defeat Wilmington 1-0 on a first-half goal; will meet Medfield in Braintree on Wednesday.
A first half goal by senior midfielder Corrine Ognibene was all Belmont needed as they hung on to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Wilmington High School to capture the Division II North sectional championships for the second time in three years today, Monday, Nov. 12 at Lynn's Manning Field. Belmont will meet Medfield in the Eastern Mass. Championships in Braintree at 5:30 Wednesday, Nov. 14. Medfield defeated Belmont, 1-0, in the Eastern finals two years ago after the Marauders defeated Danvers in the North sectionals in 2010. "It was all instinct," said Ognibene of her goal. The senior sent the ball skyward from 30 meters from the goal. The ball then was caught in the strong breeze fooling Wilmington's goalkeeper Kim Woods who saw the ball …

Marauders will need to contend with Wilmington's scoring duo which produces most of their goals.
Walking off the pitch after his team's thrilling 1-0 overtime semifinal victory over Newburyport in the Division II North tournament on Saturday, Nov. 10 in Lynn, Belmont High School Girls' Soccer Head Coach Paul Graham said he wanted Wilmington High School to beat Hamilton Wenham later that night to set up a match against the Marauders. One reason was his demonstrating solidarity with a Middlesex League compatriot. "It's great for the league that we have both teams in the final. It shows how strong (we are)," said Graham. The other, Graham said with a wry smile, is that Wilmington is a known quality. "We played Wilmington which allows us to prepare for them," said Graham. He acknowledged his team left Wilmington on Oct. 2 on the wrong end…

Olivia Lyons scores consecutive game-winning playoff goals in 1-0 win over Clippers; Sectional finals on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
When Belmont High School's Olivia Lyons runs up into the opponent's goal box from her place on the back line, something's bound to happen. That's because the senior defender will do just about anything – leaping on friend and foe, knocking over players bigger than her – to get her (pick a major body part here) on the ball to power it to the net. And in the final minute of the first overtime session in the semi-final match against Newburyport Saturday morning, Nov. 10, Lyons saw a corner from fellow senior Julia Russo drop in front of her. "I got it with my thigh this time," said Lyons after the game. "Then I kicked it into the net." Lyons' "golden" goal was the margin of victory as the Belmont's Girls' Soccer team won a dramatic 1-0 …

Four teams and several individuals seeking championships today around the state.
It's a Super Saturday for Belmont High School teams and individuals as they kick, run and swim towards team and individual honors. At Lynn's Manning Field at 10 a.m., the Girls' Soccer team – coming off their upset of top-ranked and undefeated Amesbury on Election Day – will take the field in the semi-finals of the MIAA Div. II North championships against Newburyport High School (15-2-2), the team that knocked out the Marauders of the playoffs last year. Belmont (12-3-3), led from the back by standout goalkeeper Marie-Alice Manetas and defenders Olivia Lyons and Alexandra Cellucci, will seek to pressure Newburyport through the work of Julia Russo, Sophia Eisenbach-Smith and Charlotte Alexander up front. In Wrentham, the Boys' and Girls' …

Nor'easter pushes game to Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in Lynn, to join girls' swimming and cross country to see action on Nov. 10.
The nor'easter that swept through the region bringing a blanket of snow and wind gusts also blew into the air the carefully-laid match schedule for the Div. II North girls' soccer playoffs. The result is that Belmont High School's semi-final match with Newburyport High School set for today at 5:30 p.m. as been called off, postponed to Saturday, Nov. 10. Now the fan base that follows the girls will need to get up extra early Saturday as the MIAA has scheduled the match to take place at the ungodly hour of 10 a.m, according to the tournament website. The game will take place at Manning Field in Lynn. The change will create a Saturday tsunami of Belmont High sports teams taking part in the post season. Besides girls' soccer, Belmont High's …

Will take on Newburyport on Thursday at Lynn in Div. II North semi-finals
A goal by defender Olivia Lyons from fellow senior Julia Russo in the dying minutes gave Belmont High School Girls' Soccer a stunning 2-1 victory over undefeated and number-one ranked Amesbury High School Tuesday night to propel the Marauders into the Division II North Semifinals. Belmont will play at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Manning Field in Lynn against Newburyport which defeated the Marauders, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of last year's MIAA tournament. Lyons goal – coming just before 8:40 p.m. on a cold but clear night – came after host Amesbury tied the game midway through the second half after Charlotte Alexander gave Belmont the lead 10 minutes into the second half with a goal from a Russo corner kick.

Marauder's 3-0 win over Arlington Sunday have them playing at 7 p.m. against the Indians.
After defeating league rival Arlington High School, 3-0, in the first round of the Div. II North playoffs, Sunday, Nov. 4, the Belmont Girls' Soccer team are heading to the New Hampshire border to take on top-ranked Amesbury in a late 7 p.m. start tonight, Nov. 6. Belmont is coming off an impressive shutout of the Spy Ponders which had beaten and tied the Marauders this season. On Sunday, Belmont "played a complete game," according to long-time Head Coach Paul Graham. "I could go and name each girl and those who came in (as substitutes), they were that good," said Graham. Graham did point to the play of Julia Russo who he played in the midfield rather than her favorite striker position. "She kept saying, 'Put me up front' and I told her …

Boys away Friday to defending state finalists Concord-Carlisle, Girls' at home vs. Arlington.
Can't the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association show Belmont Soccer some love? After a season in which the boys' and girls' Marauders defeated and tied their arch-rivals Winchester and secured outstanding regular season records, both Belmont teams now find themselves thrown into the playoff pit with the equilivant of the soccer lions in Division II. Ends five years of frustration to Sachems; Girls' Soccer ties up Winchester as both teams earn three-of-four points this season from top-ranked Sachems.
Was it just coincidence or a premonition that at nearly the exact time Belmont Boys' Soccer's Michael Chertkov scored his critical first goal early in the game to pull ahead of Belmont's arch – and long-time dominating – rival and unbeaten Winchester High in their decisive rematch last night, an earthquake in Maine shook the earth in Belmont? Or was it all the other way around? Whether nature or fate, the Marauders scrubbed away five years of frustration at the hands of Winchester with a hard fought 2-1 victory Tuesday night at Belmont's Harris Field, Oct. 16, doling out the season's first loss to the 14th-ranked Sachems. Chertkov scored a brace, the second an open net goal with less than a minute remaining in the game which proved the …
