Belmont Media Center Wins Regional Award for Election Coverage

Won first prize for coverage of November's election,

Congratulations go out to everyone at BMC: staff, members, volunteers and local journalists, and a Belmont High School graduate turned political consultant for winning First Place for election coverage in the 15th Annual Alliance for Community Media-Northeast Region Video Festival. Competing with more than 200 access TV centers in New England from Manhattan to Bangor, BMC's hyper-local live coverage: Election Belmont 2012 took the top award in the professional category for elections and issues. Belmont Patch and Belmont Media Center will be hosting the hour-long debate with candidates for the 24th Middlesex District.

There will be two important televised debates this Thursday, Oct. 11.  One will be between candidates who will discuss concerns of residents and how they will solve the major issues facing the public. The other one is with Joe Biden and Paul Ryan. Becker Knits Together Works on BMC's 'Art Show'

Show premieres today and for the next week on Belmont Media Center channels.

An overflow crowd of well-wishers, family and arts lovers assembled at the Belmont Media Center studios for the premiere of the second episode of the "Art Show." Produced and edited by BMC member Erin McNeill, episode two of the "Art Show" features Belmont's own Kimberly Becker, a painter and textile designer as she creates colorful small scale works in oil and watercolor of still life, flowers, fruits and city scenes, as well as large-scale architectural paintings from her studio in Somerville. Becker, who is also the owner of Belmont Therapeutic Massage Center, has just launched a new business called Nine Stones Needlework that combines her love of daily painting and textiles, selling unique cross stitch patterns. Belmont Media to Double Live Broadcasting Aug. 27

Viewers have a choice between Candidate's Night or sports talk.

Two is better than one. And on Monday, Aug. 27, Belmont Media Center (BMC) will cablecast live programming on Comcast channels 8 and 9, and on Verizon channels 28 and 29. Starting at 7 p.m., Comcast & Verzon cable subscribers can tune to BMC 8 or 28 and watch live covergae from Chenery Middle School of Candidates’ Night, sponsored by the Belmont League of Women Voters. Belmont Media Center Hosting Second Mass Flash Film Fest

Team registration begins Aug. 1 for this unique statewide short film competition: three days to make a movie.

Creating a movie takes time, money and talent. In Belmont this October, filmmakers from across Massachusetts will have to rely on their talent as the Belmont Media Center plays host to second annual Mass Flash Film Festival, the only statewide film competition where emerging video and filmmakers have only 72 hours to write, shoot and edit a four-to-seven minute “Hollywood-style” movie. All teams will have their completed films screened on the big screen at Belmont's Studio Cinema on Saturday Oct. 6. The teams will compete for a grand prize of $500 and have their movie seen on the big screen around Massachusetts. A panel of well-known filmmakers and media critics will pick the winners in both non-professional and professional categories …

Belmont Town Meeting 2012, Night Two

Welcome back after three weeks off. Tonight is the special town meeting articles.

7 p.m. Welcome back, everyone. After a week and a fortnight (love that word) away, the 2012 Belmont Town Meeting reconvenes to begin passing around the town's money in the auditorium of Belmont High School. You can view the Town Meeting on one of Belmont Media Center's cable channels (I forgot which one!) The representative legislative body of the town debated and voted on a limited number of non-financial articles back on April 23 with the creation of a stabilization fund for repairs and capital improvements for Minuteman Tech High School voted down by Town Meeting. Belmont Media Center to Cover Town Election Results at 8 p.m.

Results from Town Hall and a panel discussing the results and politics.

The Belmont Media Center will broadcast live coverage of today's town election results beginning at 8 p.m. The coverage will be seen live on Channels 8 and 28 as well as live on the web at http://belmontmedia.org/watch/govt-ed-access  Viewers will be able to see and hear candidate interviews as well as the results as they are announced at Belmont Town Hall with Belmont Patch editor Franklin Tucker while hearing commentary from a panel of residents in BMC's Studio A.  The panel will consist of co-hosts BMC's Jack Kelly and freelance reporter Susan Danseyar along with former Selectman and School Committee member Ann Marie Mahoney, former School Committee chairman John Bowe and Paul Roberts who will provide analysis and discuss issues ahead …

Belmont Patch and the Belmont Media Center welcomed the two candidates for Belmont Board of Selectmen, Andy Rojas and Dan Scharfman, to the Media Center's Lexington Street's studio for an hour-long debate on the issues facing the town and the board. Rojas, currently a member of the Planning Board, and Scharfman, elected to the School Committee in 2010, answered and discussed a wide array of questions including rationalization, "smart" growth, where the town can increase revenue, what capital projects they would support and if they would support an operational override.
