Police believe the suspect and accomplices played a "major role" in the recent spike in residential burglaries throughout the region.
Belmont Police officers arrested a Watertown man Monday, April 1, which area police departments believe played a "major role" in the recent rash of home break-ins in Belmont and neighboring towns. Earlier on Monday, a witness identified a gray Audi at a Lexington home break-in. Local detectives from several police departments identified Azad Terzian of Watertown as a possible suspect in the crimes who is known to drive an Audi. With this information, Belmont officers were able to locate and stop Terzian. After positive witness identification Terzian was placed under arrest without incident. You may have come to the opinion that the "music" coming from the myriad of ice cream trucks that occupy Belmont in the warm-weather months should be categorized as a criminal offense, if a proposed new general town bylaw is passed by Town Meeting representatives in April, anyone operating those Piped Pipers of frozen treat vehicles will themselves be required to undergo a criminal history check by the Belmont Police. The new bylaw – which will effect door-to-door salespeople, pawnbrokers, taxi drivers and "dealers in second-hand articles" along with ice cream truck operators – will obligate anyone seeking a license for those activities to submit to a criminal background check which includes being fingerprinted by police officials. Belmont Police provides advise to residents: lock it up!
With an uptick in residential break-ins in Belmont and neighboring communities, the Belmont Police are distributing the following advisory to assist in avoiding being a break-in victim. The general break-in reports are similar to those in the past where the entrance door/lock is forced opened or simply unlocked. The majority of breaks are occurring between the hours of 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Many Belmont homes have entrances that are recessed with foyer so that a person can stand in the entranceway and easily pry open the lock without being seen from the street. The new addition to the department is part of a gift.
The Belmont Police Department's newest member is expected to be dogged in his pursuit of the law. Thanks to a generous anonymous donation, the Belmont Police Department has been able to implement its first ever K-9 program. The doggie, named “Grim”, officially joined the force on Monday, March 11, and will be partnered with Belmont Officer Cory Taylor. Officers Taylor and Grim are set to undergo extensive training at the Boston Police K-9 academy in the coming months to learn skills such as basic patrol functions as well as narcotics detection.

Three police departments, Staties and a dog looking for a pair of characters who bang-and-ran in a stolen car.
Belmont residents are accustomed to a good night's sleep but very early this morning, Tuesday, March 5, the good folks along Cross Street were rudely awoken by the crashing of a series of unusual hit-and-run incidents and then from the police vehicles rushing after the suspects. At 1:45 a.m., Belmont Police received a call from a resident who said a dark SUV had entered two driveways including one at 278 Cross St. and ran into a number of vehicles parked for the night and then fleeing. The damage was so severe to all involved the ramming SUV must have had suffered front-end damage and left with at least one flat tire. And the chase was on! Police, town-owned electric utility report relatively quiet night.
Just because there are no private vehicles on Belmont streets due to the blizzard coming through town yesterday and town, it doesn't mean residents should think they own the roads, said Belmont Police Lt. Richard Santangelo. "We have reports of a lot of people walking round along the roads. What they don't understand is that the town plows are traveling fairly fast on the streets and they aren't expecting pedestrians," said Santangelo, updating what has been a busy night for Belmont Police. No on-street parking or using municipal/school lots; violators will be towed.
The Belmont Police Deparment has declared a snow emergency for the town in preparation of the arrival of what some meterologists are calling a historic nor'easter blizzard. The emergency will be in effect from 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 until 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. Under the town bylaws, parking is not allowed on all roadways and Municipal parking lots in Belmont. Vehicles on streets or lots will be towed to allow the Highway Department to clear the entire width of the roadway.
