Belmont Town Election 2013

Tie in Five: Precinct to Decide Final Belmont Town Meeting Seat

Unlike some states where a tie can be broken by a roll of the dice or a game of Texas Hold-em, Town Meeting members will decide who takes the 12th seat in the Fifth.

They counted the votes at Belmont's Town Clerk's Office and the final tally from the Belmont Town Election this past Tuesday is official. And while one of the interesting results from the April 2 election was the tie between top vote getters, Elyse Shuster and Laurie Slap, in the Belmont School Committee race, it turns out that it was not the only race where an equal number of voters cast their ballots for two candidates.  But what was interesting in the tie between Fifth Precinct Town Meeting candidates Andrea Serra-Masciari and Matthew Sullivan was it was for the 12th and final seat on the town's legislative body. While not unusual, a tie in elected contests are resolved differently from state-to-state and from community-to-community. A …

Belmont Town Election 2013

Belmont's Newest School Committee Member Focus on the Whole Student

Elyse Shuster elected to fill the seat once held by Dan Scharfman.

The celebration at Comella's Restaurant on Leonard Street on Tuesday night, April 2 included pizza, beer and a winning smile on Elyse Shuster's face. The first-time town-wide candidate not only won a seat on the Belmont School Committee but received the exact number of votes as incumbent Laurie Slap, 1,539, in the annual Belmont Town Election.  "It's a funny coincidence that our numbers were the same since Laurie [Slap's] numbers were really close in each precinct," said Shuster, who will take the seat occupied by Dan Scharfman who died in January. The 17-year Belmont resident and mother of three daughters, all who have or are attending Belmont public schools, Shuster said she feels very proud to equal Slap's vote count because "she's an …

Quiet At The Polls: Belmont Voters Slow to Come Out

Polls are open until 8 p.m. at all eight polling sites.

In November of last year, the line never stopped long enough for poll workers to have lunch at Precinct 4 as about 940 voters had cast their ballots by 3 p.m. at the Butler School in Waverley Square. Around the same time of day today, the only line around the Butler were of children being released from school as the 4th Precinct just nudged beyond three digits with 102 ballots cast in the Belmont Town Election.  Where more than a thousand had voted in the General Election five months ago midway through the day at nearly all the polling sites, Belmont voters enthusiasm has been as cold as the weather – blustery winds making the 40 degree temperature feel well below freezing – with only a single competitive town-wide race (for School …

Sleepy Start to Belmont's Town Election Day

But the importance of the day should not be lost on voters, says Town Clerk.

Tom Flynn vividly remembers last November when nearly 100 people waited in line at Belmont's Precinct 2 polling location to vote. The line of voters extended down the stairway and out the front door of Town Hall for the opportunity to cast their ballot for President and state offices.  It took a while to vote then, said Flynn. No problem this time around.  Flynn of Dundonald Road was the first and only voter waiting at the doors of the Board of Selectmen's Room which was transformed into a polling station.  "I'm just doing my civic duty," said the former Cambridge-resident who has lived in Belmont for the past 15 years. It was a sleepy start to a relatively quiet Belmont Town Election, which, for the first time, is being held on the first …
