Macy's Closing Will Not Impact Town's Tax Revenue ... For Now

Town Treasurer predicts no impact unless the site stays shut for a while.

While Belmont Center – and the town – will be losing its largest retail presence when Macy's closes its doors for the final time in less than two months, there will be no impact on tax revenue coming into the town's coffers in the short term, said Belmont's chief tax collector. "Just like any property, it doesn't matter if it's occupied or empty, the landlord (Kevin Foley, the manager of Locatelli Properties) is responsible for paying the tax," said Floyd Carman, Belmont's Town Treasurer.  In fact, it will be the state that will feel the pinch with a drop in sales revenues, said Carman. Belmont Approves Paydown Policy for Retiree Health Costs

While a "drop in the bucket" that would cost about $200,000, town's new OPEB policy for Wall Street's eyes to keep Belmont in Triple A shape.

In the view of some members of various town boards and committees, the idea of taking approximately $200,000 – using last year's budget numbers – of scarce dollars from the town's annual budget to draw down a roughly $200 million unfunded liability to town retirees is like attempting to fill the Grand Canyon by throwing handfuls of dirt into the gap. Town Begins Online Payments for RE Taxes

Billtrust will allow for payment histories and scheduling direct payments.

It just got "easier" to pay your real estate and personal property taxes as Belmont taxpayers will be able to send in their payments like their other bills: online. Beginning July 2, residents can enroll for paperless billing for the town through "Billtrust." Residents will be able to access payment histories, schedule direct debit and credit card payments using a smartphone, and much more.
