Cookies, pies, cakes, pastries; that's what Belmont is craving.
When it comes to desserts, Belmont residents settle into two camps: the baked goods group and the ice cream lovers. And there are great places in Belmont to find what you're looking for to satisfy a sweet tooth. But when push comes to shove, residents line up in our weekly Best of Patch Readers' Choice poll for a store that began in Belmont Center before heading to Cushing Square several years ago. The winning store is Ohlin's Bakery which received 164 votes. "I LOVE Ohlins Bakery ... my son thinks says their bagels are the best he has ever had!" said Lisa Allen. "We also love the donuts, cakes and the Oliver Twist is amazing!" But there is something to be said about ice cream and frozen yogurt, especially as we stand on the doorstep of …

Here's a hint: It's in Belmont Center and it's the official cut-through to Leonard Street.
It's narrow with sporting goods crammed into every corner. Downstairs is where the hockey, baseball and lacrosse equipment are located, shoes are upstairs with the soccer, swimming and clothes, caps and baseballs. They will sharpen your skates and is the "official" cut through from Claflin to Belmont Center on Leonard Street. It is the essence of helpful customer service, the place to find your "Belmont" embossed sweatshirt and a place to bump into residents. If you didn't think that Champions Sporting Goods in the Center wouldn't be voted by readers as the Best of Patch Readers' Choice Sporting Goods Store, then head over to the store and say hello and talk to owner Gerry Dickhaut whose been running his store for nearly a quarter of a …

Close between a Belmont office and DIY software.
Federal and state tax prep software is getting better and easier to use. So it's no wonder the best known do-it-yourself programs – you can download them on-line so you don't even need to go to a store – were popular in this week's Best of Patch Readers' Choice poll question on Belmont's favorite tax preparer. But for a majority of readers, the personal touch of Russell M. Khedarian is preferred over the automated approach, making the Brighton Street CPA this week's Patch Readers' Choice selection. A close second was software such as TurboTax. Check back Monday for next week's poll, and you'll get to vote on your favorite place to buy sporting goods. We're doing a poll on the Best Place to have your taxes done (at the last minute) next …

The winner of the Best of Patch Readers' Choice is a Belmont Center institution.
You may think of Frankie's Catch of the Day as the place where Belmont residents (including frequent customer Anne Romney) goes for a wide array of fresh fish and seafood. But many customers also know the Belmont Center mainstay for making the best "chips" in the fish and chips takeout dinner; hot, freshly-made fries that hit the spot. And Belmont Patch readers voted that Frankie's fries are the best in Belmont, winning the Best of Patch Readers' Choice for Belmont's favorite french fries with 31 percent of readers voting. "The hidden gem for Belmont french fries lies at Frankies Catch of the Day on Leonard Street! They are hot, crispy, meaty and abundant every time!" wrote bytheshore4. Nor do readers need to go far to find the next two …

Patch readers: Tell us your favorite place to pick up fries of all sorts.
First off, don't be dissing french fries. Julia Child love the ones from McDonald's and thought that they were a great way occasionally (of course) to serve the venerable spud. So, we're looking for the best place in town that makes french fries. Here are some of our favorite places, but if we're leaving one off of the list, please let us know in the comments and we'll add it: Nick's Place II Belmont Pizza Gregory's House of Pizza Michael's Pizza Brother's Pizza House Theo's Pizzaria & Grill Thyago's Pizza Frankies Catch of the Day C.E. Restaurant, 271 Belmont St. Il Casale Voting in the poll below is open until 9 a.m. Friday. Ties will be broken by whichever business has the most positive comments in the section below. A close second and third are locations in Waltham where many residents work out.
It was a close vote but in the end, the Fitness Together location in Waverley Square is voted by 37 percent of Patch readers as THE place to work up a sweat as the best gym or work out location. "I absolutely love the staff at Fitness Together," said Anne Mahon, who is so busy as a Realtor that it's hard to think that she would have time to workout. "You get one on one attention and they lovingly kick my butt into shape with really great work outs. My son Jack and I both go there. We're losing weight and getting in great shape. Now they've got "Pack Groups" where they'll do three at a time in training. Anyone want to join me?" A close second with 33 percent is Waverly Oaks Athletic Club, just across the town line in Waltham. And third is…

Conley's and Donohue's took the runner-up slot and show.
Belmont Patch readers voted that Not Your Average Joe's, 55 Main St., in the heart of Watertown Square, is the best spot to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. The national chain beat out Belmont's "unofficial" pub, Conley's Pub and Grille on Belmont Street in Watertown, just on the other side of the road from Belmont. And Donohue's just outside Watertown Square placed third. Brian Rogers said it plainly: "It's Donohue's." Check back Monday for next week's poll, and you'll get to vote on the best place in and around Belmont to work out and hit the gym.
