Performances are tonight and Saturday, May 4, at the Chenery Middle School.
On February 4, the stage at Belmont's Chenery Middle School was empty and the approximately 120 students were about to have "Mr. Haywood" tell them about a musical they were "hoping" to stage. After four and five rehearsals a week that involved countless hours of learning songs, acting and remembering dance routines, this week those same students are back on the stage, now as an ensemble ready to perform the classic musical, "Once Upon a Mattress." The final two productions of the Mary Rogers adaptation of the fairy tale will take place tonight, Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 4, also at 7 p.m. at the Chenery Middle School's auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and can be purchased at the door or online. "…

A challenge met by Middle Schoolers in Belmont.
Upon returning to school on Monday morning of this week, seventh grade students in Mr. Semuels’ World Geography class, spied something new in their classroom. Moved to help the victims of the Marathon Bombings, Semuels had placed a One Fund Boston jar on his desk and invited the students to make a contribution, if they so desired. On Wednesday afternoon, eight of his students decided to try their hand at fund raising for the One Fund Boston jar via a lemonade stand. “We saw the powdered lemonade mix on the shelf in my kitchen,” explained Alison Sawyer, “and the idea just came to us. We could set up a stand and donate all the proceeds to Semuels’ One Fund Boston jar.” The seventh graders got busy mixing lemonade, finding materials for a …

A little-remembered Boston trial involving the Fugitive Slave Law presented at the Chenery Middle School with a grant from the Foundation for Belmont Education.
This past Wednesday, April 3, Chenery Middle School eighth graders had the chance to witness first hand the trial of Anthony Burns. Thanks to a grant from the Foundation for Belmont Education, students watched as Theatre Espresso, an acting troupe out of the Wheelock Family Theater, dramatized this critical case in US history. The 1854 trial of Anthony Burns, one of the first tests of the Fugitive Slave Law, brought the question of slavery into the heart of Boston. It energized the abolitionist movement and brought to the forefront questions of law and morality. Despite support by many prominent Bostonians, Burns was returned to his Southern master by the ruling of Judge Edward Loring. After the enactment, students became participants …

Trio of Chenery eighth graders heading to state finals in April.
Because of the unexpected rocky landscape at the scheduled lunar landing site, astronaut Neil Armstrong was required to disengage the automatic system and pilot the landing craft, Eagle, he and fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin were riding to the moon's surface back in July 1969. The unexpected maneuver used so much fuel that Armstrong, the first person to step on the moon, landed the "Eagle" with less than 30 seconds of fuel remaining. If there was one thing that linked that landing on the moon 44 years ago and three Chenery Middle School students who were about to present their entry at the Massachusetts History Day District Competition, it would be taking their mission down to the final seconds. The trio of eighth graders were tweeking their…

Talk to be held at the Chenery Middle School at 7 p.m.; open to all parents with children in Belmont public schools.
When the latest Youth Risk Study was released in November, one set of numbers stood out to everyone who read the document: One in eight 7th and 8th graders at the Chenery Middle School reported in 2011 having serious thought of committing suicide, up from 8 percent reported two years earlier. While those numbers were concerning enough, half of those – 6 percent – made serious plans to kill themselves and half of those actually tried to commit suicide. Dr. Larry Berkowitz, director of Riverside Trauma Center in Needham, will speak to the parents on high risk behaviors of adolescents in Middle and High schools including depression and suicidal ideation at a Belmont Parent's Night talk tonight at 7 p.m. at the Chenery Middle School auditorium…

Works by students from Belmont's Chenery Middle School.
More than 13,000 works of art by students in middle and high school from across the state were submitted for judging in thirteen categories in this year's annual Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards. And 46 Belmont students, many from Belmont's Chenery Middle School, received awards. Yet regardless of award status, it is a very high honor to have your work entered for judging in this competition, according to Chenery arts teacher Kristen Ripley. You can visit what is happening in Ripley's art class by going to her website "Art with Ms. Ripley." "We would like to share all of the work – award or not – with the community. At the middle school, we work hard to send the message that all artwork has value, even if that means it is not chosen by …
