Nearly $1 million in Community Preservation Act tax revenue allocated; final approval will be in the hands of Town Meeting.
More than two years after Belmont voters approved the Community Preservation Act, the first of nearly $2 million in CPA funds was approved to go before May's Town Meeting for a final OK. Nine applications were accepted by the Community Preservation Committee to receive a total of $959,000 just about half of the total amount in the committee's coffers which is funded by a surtax on real estate transactions. The nine projects include: • $10,000 to conduct a building survey and "investigation" of the circa-1853 William Flagg Homer House on Pleasant Street, the home of the Belmont Woman's Club. • $20,000 to develop a landscape plan for an inter-generational walking path at Clay Pit Pond adjacent to Belmont High School. • $10,000 to lay better …

Community Preservation Committee readies to dole out money to community.
Remember the Community Preservation Act? The town's voters approved the measure in November 2010 increasing home owner's tax bill by 1.5 percent to fund preserving open space, historic sites and creating affordable housing and recreational facilities. Nearly two years since then, Belmont now has approximately $2 million in its account and the town's Community Preservation Committee now wants to begin giving away those funds to residents or worthy organizations. First meeting held to begin studying needs/resources for community preservation, open space, recreation and affordable housing.
It took nearly a year after residents voted for it but Belmont finally has a dedicated group to ensure that tax money allocated by the Community Preservation Act will be spent in the most beneficial way for the entire town. The Community Preservation Committee held its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in Town Hall to organize its tasks and set parameters for going forward. There will be a large number of projects to consider for funding by the CPA, members agreed, and discussed that they will make recommendations to a future Town Meeting after thorough and extremely careful consideration.
