MBTA Seeks Person Who Left A Bus Load of Cash on the 73 Trolley

T want to reunite the owner of a "large sum of cash" left on the Waverley Square trackless trolley yesterday afternoon, Monday, May 6.

Are you missing a large amount of cash? Were you riding the Route 73 trolley heading towards Belmont Monday afternoon after work when it happened? If you are the one missing the money or you know who is, the MBTA Police is looking to reunite the money with its rightful owner.  The money – described as "a large sum of cash" – was in an envelope when it was discovered by a female passenger on a seat on the Route 73 trackless trolley around 4:45 p.m. as the electric bus was traveling outbound to Belmont's Waverley Square from Harvard Square in Cambridge, according to Joe Pesaturo, director of communications at the MBTA. As the trolley was entering Cushing Square, the passenger handed the envelope operator Kevin White, who has been with the T …

A pair of 60-plus seat restaurants – an Italian eatery from the successful chef/owner of Waltham's La Campania and a sister location of a top-rated Mexican restaurant in the South End – are proposing to open this year in Belmont, adding to the town's growing reputation as a destination location for good dining.  Located in the location once occupied by a shoe repair shop at 436 Common St. in Cushing Square, La Maione Pizzeria Con Cucina will be an Italian eatery focusing on Neapolitan-style pizza and southern Italian "soul food" from chef John Maione who has owned La Campania on Main Street for more than a decade. Over in Belmont Center, El Centro Mexican Restaurant will be the suburban outpost of the South End-based standout located on …

Decision On Cushing Village 'By Town Meeting'

Planning Board Chairman predicts vote on Belmont's largest development in late April.

After nearly a year since first meeting, the Belmont Planning Board has sent out a tentative "save the date" for its big decision on the largest commercial development in Belmont. Belmont Planning Board Chairman Sami Baghdady told Belmont Patch that he is pushing for a final up-or-down vote on the Cushing Village development before the annual Town Meeting set to assemble on April 29. "I hope that we will be a position to vote on the project in a few month. My goal is before Town Meeting," said Baghdady. Baghdady's announcement came after the chairman proclaimed that the board was prepared to move forward after 11 months of reviewing the critical "shape, size and mass" dimensions of the proposed 184,000 square-foot in the heart of Cushing …

Photo Gallery: Haunting Good Halloween in Cushing Square

Business association members open their doors to trick-or-treaters

Toothpaste, a toothbrush and a tooth strode through Cushing Square Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 31. "She thought of the idea," said the mom of the toothy brood, pointing to the toothpaste. "I just stayed up until 1 a.m. making (the costumes)," she said. The walking dental exhibit joined a collection of princesses, mushroom heads, superheroes and other dressed up Halloween tricks and treats characters during the Cushing Square Business Association's annual Halloween in Cushing Square. Businesses opened their doors and greeted the mini-mob of monsters and others as parents enjoyed the first dry day since Hurricane Sandy's arrival. If you have your own Halloween photos to share, select the big, green "Upload Photos & Videos" button at the top of…

Letters to the Editor

Letter: Large Buildings at Cushing Village A Detriment to Town's Character

Cushing Square and the issue of urbanization.

To the editor: Urbanization is not revitalization for the town of Belmont. When our town's elected representatives voted in good faith for the Overlay District By-Law, our vision was never that Cushing Square would become a Porter Square. We are a residential community adapting to the changing needs of our Town by using appropriate space for a residential/commercial project that enhances our economic base and our quality of life.   For the last five years we have been dealing with the developer's vision for large urban structures that are diametrically opposed to the heart and soul of the Belmont community. At its June 25 meeting, the Planning Board directed the developer to come to the next hearing with plans inclusive of a building on …
