From the bombing on Marathon Monday to Friday's capture of a suspect, students may seek someone to talk to.
Dr. Thomas Kingston reiterated Monday, April 22 what students, parents and educators have been thinking for the past week. "Certainly this spring school vacation week has been different from any other," said Kingston as school resumed after the April recess, a time when mass targeted terrorism returned to the United States and they and their friends were locked down in their homes as a killer was being hunted down on the streets one town over. "[The bombings] may well have an impact on our children for weeks and months ahead," said Kingston, who said each school principal would be making special announcements on the subject on Monday. While the veteran educator made the pledge that "our schools continue to be safe places and refuges for …

Schools, players and community honor victims of Sandy Hook shooting tragedy.
The ice on the rink was chippy and grooved after the match between Belmont and Wakefield girls Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 20. But rather then leave the ice for the Zamboni to lay a clean sheet at the Viglirolo Skating Rink for the next game, the girls joined their male counterparts in a moment of remembrance of a national horror. Brought together by long-time Belmont Boys' Head Coach Dante Muzzioli, intermission between the match-up of Middlesex League rivals became a unifying event for the students to honor the 26 victims of the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that took place just five days earlier. "It is a great opportunity for the boys and girls to know that they are more than (hockey players)," said Muzzioli before …

James Brown will take over assistant principal's position for the remainder of the school year.
David Smokler, who came to Belmont High School last year as assistant principal for sophomores and seniors, has resigned, according to Principal Dan Richards. Smokler had been on an indefinite leave from his position when he resigned. "I want to thank Mr. Smokler for his past year of service to Belmont High School and the community," said Richards in his blog today, Nov. 2. Smokler came to Belmont after serving as assistant principal at Pembroke High School and was a familiar face at student events – he was a judge for "Belmont Idol" – and sporting events. During Smokler’s absence, James Brown, the High School’s Lead Guidance counselor, has been appointed as the interim assistant principal for grades 10 and 12 for the remainder of the …

Dan Richards named Melrose High principal last year, Somerville's Purnima Vadhera, a K-8 interim principal.
When assistant principal Dan Richards left Belmont High School last year, many around town thought the school district was losing an outstanding administrator. But a year after becoming Principal of Melrose High School, Richards is back at his old stomping grounds as he was named one of two finalists to be the next Belmont High School principal. Joining Richards as the last two candidates for the job is Purnima Vadhera, the interim principal of Somerville's Arthur D Healey School, a K-8 "innovative participatory learning community." Belmont Superintendent Dr. Thomas Kingston, who selected the finalists with Assistant Superintendent Janice Darias, said in the past week that he hopes to name a successor to Dr. Michael Harvey – the current …

Belmont can have Richards. He showed little class with his departure from Melrose. His lack of communication with City officials, the School District and citizens of Melrose over the past week reinforces the impression of many here in Melrose that he hid in his office and did not engage with MHS students, faculty and staff. NO CLASS!   more ›
