Fire Log: False Alarm Leads to Evacuation

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Yummy Sept. 3 – Just before 7 p.m. on Labor Day Engine 1 was sent to Wilson Avenue for the report of an outdoor odor of smoke. When they got there, the crew reported finding the fire; it was a backyard barbecue on Francis Street. There is no description what was being grilled.  Early morning odor Sept. 4 – It was coming close to 2 a.m. when a firefighter in one of the command cars smelled the strong odor of natural gas at Waverley Crossing on Trapelo Road. Sure enough, it was a outdoor gas leak. The firefighter measured the air and discovered it was saturated with gas. He contacted the fire alarm and requested that National Grid respond to the scene to further investigate the leak. It's not the first time and sadly, not the last time it …

Fire Log: Step 1, Open Flue. Step 2, Don't Skip Step 1

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

The flue is what now? April 23 – At 12:47 p.m., Engine 1, Ladder 1 and a command car were dispatched to a two-family on Gilbert Road for reports that alarms were sounding in house due to some smoke incident. On arrival, the crew from Engine 1 investigated and found that smoke was indeed inside the house. That condition usually happens when someone builds a fire and forgets to open the fireplace flue. A firefighter opened the flue and the dwelling was ventilated. Gas in Waverley April 25 – At 2:41 p.m., Engine 2 was sent to the corner of Church Street and Trapelo Road for what the fire department is calling an "ongoing issue": an outdoor gas leak. Fire Log: Young Idle Hands Had Fire Dept. Scrambling

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Young idle hands Jan. 30 – At 3:03 p.m., two engines, a ladder truck, the rescue vehicle and a command car were directed to the new Wellington Elementary School on Orchard Street when a fire alarm was pulled in the builiding. But once there, it was determined that the call was a false alarm as it was likely one of the young students who struck the alarm. The School's staff will try to determine who was responsible and "educate" the student. Where there's smoke ... no fire Jan. 30 – Nearly two hours after the false alarm at the school, the same group of fire equipment were sent to a Common Street service station in Cushing Square for numerous reports of heavy smoke coming from the building.
