Belmont Fire Log: Belmont Center Night Workers Hit Gas Pipe

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Yes, it does smell like gas May 5 – A few minutes after noon, Engine 2 headed to a location on Carleton Road to investigate the outside odor of natural gas. And, yes, there was a faint odor detected in the air so the gas company was asked to respond. Thankfully there was no inside odor and normal readings were displayed by the fire department's detection equipment in nearby residences. Plug it in  May 5 – A quarter past 6 p.m., Engine 1 and Rescue 1 were dispatched to a condo complex on Lexington Street after the carbon monoxide alarm went off. The homeowner who made the call met with companies outside. The Rescue personnel performed a quick medical assessment while the crew from Engine 1 checked the interior. After detection equipment …

Belmont Fire Log: Outdoor Fires Caught Early ... This Time

By the way, about all those back issues of the "New Yorker" ...  May Day: At a quarter 'til nine, all Belmont companies were dispatched to a Bradford Road single-family after a call that a smokey odor was filling the inside of the house. Engine 1 crews quickly discovered that the smell was coming from the door bell which had shorted. Companies removed the fuse from the electrical panel in order to disconnect power to the door bell while the homeower was told to contact a qualified electrician to service the system. While there, fire officials spoke with the owner regarding a large amount of combustibles near his basement heating unit and the lack of any working smoke detectors in his home. Belmont Fire Log: Cooking the Checks

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Snow trippin' Feb. 11 – At 1:40 p.m., Engine 1 was sent to the corner of Bradley Road and Gordon Terrace because a fire alarm street box had been "tripped" – someone had pulled the alarm. Upon investigation it was determined that a resident shoveling snow very close to the box somehow hit it with his shovel or the snow. When the department tested the box, the fire alarm was working slow. The crew made a temporary fix for the street box while calling the Belmont Municipal Light Department to take a look at town equipment.  What do you serve with a bank draft? Feb. 11 – About a quarter to midnight, fire personnel rushed to a Gilbert Road two-family house for a reported building on fire. When they arrived, the occupant had just used a fire …

Fire Log: Kitchen, Fireplace Is Where the Action Was

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Up the pole Nov. 18 – Just before half past 2 p.m., the entire company was sent to Simmons Avenue for a reported fire. When Engine 2 got there, they discovered that a light pole was in flames from apparent electrical contact. The Belmont Municipal Light Department arrived on the scene and confirmed to the firefighters that the power to the pole was disconnected which allowed Engine 2 to extinguish the fire as well as cool down the pole and the surrounding area. The Light Department remained on scene to handle bringing power back to the neighborhood.  Burner burning Nov. 19 – A minute after 1 a.m., Engine 2, Ladder 1 and an engine from Watertown took to the early morning streets to a multifamily building on Ericsson Street for smoke in the …

Fire Log: Burners Behaving Badly

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department in the past week.

Burner hick up Feb. 5 – At 6:57 p.m., all fire units were dispatched to a single-family house on Albert Avenue for a report of smoke in the basement. On arrival, Engine 2 investigated and found a smoke condition caused by a malfunctioning oil-fired heating system. The system was shut down and red-tagged for service. The owner was advised to contact a service technician for immediate service. Backfiring burner Feb. 7 – Just after 4:05 a.m., all fire equipment were sent to a house on Radcliffe Road for the report of an explosion in the basement. Once there, firefighters discovered that the loud 'bang' was more likely the delayed ignition of the home's oil burner. Personnel shut the burner down and the homeowner was told to notify their oil …

Fire Log: Irene Caused Trees to Fall

Events and incidents handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Irene call, number 1 Aug. 28 – At 10:16 a.m., Engine 1 and a command car were dispatched to a Williow Street address to investigate the reported tree fire. Captain DeMarco received a call from the homeowner stating that a power line was causing the tree to smoke and catch fire. High winds from the storm were causing a tree and a power line to rub against each other. Smoke and a burning odor were noted. Belmont Municipal Light Department arrived on scene and companies remained until the incident was mitigated. Irene call, part 2 Aug 28 – At 11:41 a.m., Engine 2, and a command car were dispatched to a Claflin Street single family to investigate the report of a tree down into a house. Fire Log: Child Stuck on Upland Road

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Pit fire out Aug. 14 – At 12:32 a.m., Engine 2 was dispatched to a Selwyn Road location for the report of smoke in the area. Companies checked the street and found a recently extinguished fire pit at a residency on Payson Terrace. Car hits house Aug. 14 – At 3:22 p.m., Engine 1 was dispatched to a Charles Street home after it was hit by a car. Firefighters determined that the vehicle had damaged only the foundation and referred the matter to the town's building inspector.  Batteries not energizing Aug. 15 – At 11:17 a.m., fire units were dispatched to a home on Channing Road for multiple alarms going off. Apparently, the homeowner activated her "Lifeline" personal alarm when two of her smoke detectors began sounding. With no smoke or fire …

Fire Log: Burning Up the End of the School Year

Unsafe end-of-the-school-year celebration June 19 – At 6:35 p.m., Engine 1 and a command car were dispatched to a Belmont Street resident for a citizen's complaint. It appeared that a student decided to celebrate the end of the school year by burning his book binder outside his house. While the fire was out when they arrived, firefighters told both the student and his mother about town bylaws against this sort of festivities and just the dangers of this action.  Gas on the street June 21 – At 11:37 a.m., firefighters were dispatched for an odor of natural gas at a location on Trapelo Road. Responding units did detect a "sight odor in the area" and determined that there was a gas leak. The gas company was notified. Not romantic at all June …

Fire Log: Tree Takes A Tumble Onto A House

Brush fire, part 1 June 5 – At 4:37 p.m., Engine 1 was dispatched to a location on Common Street for a brush-and-grass fire. It was determined that the fire started from careless disposal of cigarette.  What's that odor?  June 6 –  At 9:39 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a Belmont Street location for the report of an odor in the street. During the investigation, there were markings in the street for what appeared to be a future National Grid work site. National Grid was notified to respond for a possible gas leak. Brush fire, part 2 June 6 – At 2:32 p.m., fire units were dispatched to a location on Beech Street for a brush-and-grass mix fire. There was a small fire in the mulch between the sidewalk and the street. Arriving companies …

Fire Log: Gas Is Leaking Inside and Out

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Refilling event May 22 – At 8:22 a.m., fire personnel were dispatched to the former Belmont Municipal Light Department building on Concord Avenue after an empty sprinkler system became filled with water and activated a water flow alarm. Companies that investigated the building found no signs of a water leak. Fire Department firefighters shut down and drained the system. Kevin Looney from the town's Building Services responded. The system was red tagged. Gas inside May 24 – At 11:21 p.m., Engine 2, Ladder 1 and a command car were dispatched to a house on Little Pond Road to investigate a natural gas detector going off in a single family house.
