Firearm Licenses Increasing in Belmont

State statistic show a quarter more licenses issued in the past five years for the most common handgun/rifle permit.

Since 2008, the Belmont Police Department has seen a steady increase in residents coming to Police Headquarters requesting and being issued a state license to own and carry a variety of handguns and rifles.  In the past five years, the number of Class A licenses issued in Belmont, which permits the purchase, possession and carrying of all ammunition, handguns, rifles, shotguns and both large and non-large capacity feeding "clips", has jumped by 26 percent as currently 453 residents hold this permit. Belmont is not alone to see an increase in licenses issued; neighboring Arlington as seen a third more permits issued in the past five years with 826 Class A license holders in town. TELL US: Should Licensed Gun Owners' Information be Public?

If you are licensed to own a gun, do you care if your name and address are publicized?

A news publication in New York is under scrutiny for publishing the names and addresses of gun owners in certain parts of the state.   Less than two weeks after the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn., the New York Journal News earlier this week published the names and addresses of local gun owners in three New York counties.   A story titled, "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood," highlights the names and addresses of residents who are licensed to own handguns.
