Belmont Girls' Lacrosse Take Double Dip to Lexington, Winchester

Home losses pushes record below .500.

A pair of losses at Harris Field has Belmont High School's Girls' Lacrosse team battling to stay above the .500 level that would secure the team a return to the playoffs for the third year running. Against a defensive-strong Lexington High School led by goalie Sara Lehman on Friday, May 3, Belmont's sophomore standout goaltender Linda Herlihy kept the team in the second half with numerous solo saves. Trailing 7-5 early in the second, the Marauder's leading scorer, senior Katie Leinbach (who finished the game with four goals) took over by not just winning consecutive face-offs but scoring goals while holding possession. But after saving two shots – both hitting the post – a goal by Fiona Fitzgerald with 11:40 remaining in the game led to …

Belmont Girls' Hoops: Marauders Punish Lexington in Season Finale

Six seniors show the way as the Marauders ran the Minutemen out of the gym in convincing fashion.

It was Seniors Night Friday, Feb. 15 and the last time Katie Leinbach, Amari Bradshaw, Katlyn Noonan, Nayiri Ayanian, Olivia Lyons and Kate Zolner would suit up in their white home uniforms and step onto Belmont Wenner Field House's vinyl court as members of Belmont High School's Girls' Basketball team. In this, their final home game of their hoop careers, the six led their team in writing a statement for the season with a steely focus and determination against a highly-touted Lexington High School team that beat-up the Marauders, 58-45, a month earlier. Belmont was going to play their game and don't expect to beat them. Before the largest crowd of the season – including nearly two-dozen of Bradshaw's extended family wearing "Team Amari" T…

Belmont Hockey: Minutemen Take Down Boys', Girls'

Lexington's teams prove to be unwelcome guests as they send back Marauders.

Boys' Score Not Indicative of Effort It was Parent's Appreciation Day for Belmont High School Boys' Ice Hockey Saturday, Jan 13, at Belmont's Viglirolo Skating Rink. The railing along the raised deck was covered with heartfelt messages by players to their mothers and fathers. And Belmont players demonstrated to their parents an effort and grit that allowed the team to play with Lexington through the first two periods, trailing 3-1 (with freshman Brian Garrett scoring from fellow frosh David Bailey 29 seconds in to the second period), including stretches where Belmont's opportunistic offense was complementing a tight defense that frustrated the Lexington High School Minuteman forwards just as top-flight Reading High was left pondering. But …

Despite Loss, Belmont Girls' Swimming League Co-Champs

Lexington turn back late Marauder run with strong showing in final relay.

If, as the old sporting adage goes, a tie is like kissing your sister, is a three way tie for the Middlesex League championship like kissing your twin sisters? After coming back from a sizable deficit to visiting Lexington Wednesday, Oct. 24, with a clean 1-2-3 sweep in the penultimate race, Belmont Girls' Swimming's could not reel in the especially strong set of Minutemen free-stylists in the 400 yard free relay to fall short, 96-84, in the final duel meet of the season at the pool in the Wenner Field House. Down by 16 points with three events to go, Belmont clawed back 4 points from the Lexington lead with Maya Nagashima winning the 100 yard backstroke going away in 1:04.75 with Angela Li taking third with a 1:07.38 and Anna Corning …

Double Dip: Boys', Girls' Hoops Tripped in Lex

Slow starts sink Marauders, hurting their drive to the tournament.

Belmont High School Boys' and Girls' Basketball teams could not over come slow starts and found themselves fighting for future playoff positions as they lost to host Lexington High Friday night, Jan. 20.  Girls' Can't Complete Climb Back, Fall to Minutemen The Belmont High Girls' Hoops team is beginning to resemble a Katie Perry song: "Cause you're hot and you're cold." On the same week that they couldn't miss a shot in a win against archrival Watertown, the Marauders' could not hit a first half basket against struggling host Lexington. And despite several strong runs in the second half, Belmont could not overtake the Minutemen, falling 42-37. Belmont leaves Lexington at 4-8 while the Minutemen up their record to 5-6. Cat Costello and Kate…
