On Saturday: Letter Carrier Food Drive, Macy's At 70

A celebration of retail longevity and helping to deliver a blow against hunger.

When people call the Macy's Department Store in Belmont Center "Filene's," it's understandable. For many Belmont residents, it seems as if the retail operation has been the town center since ... well, since forever.  In fact, the Federated Department store opened it's door on Leonard Street when most men wore hats, Harvard's tuition was four figures and before anyone knew of a navel station named Pearl Harbor. What is now Macy's has been serving the greater Belmont community since May 3, 1941, having been the retail anchor for the town's largest and busiest business center for 70 years. And as one of the few remaining unique 'city center' stores within the Macy’s chain of 800 locations, the Belmont location continues to serve generations …
