Just Missing Out: Hegarty Celebrates Fight for Rep Seat

Arlington voter turns race away from Belmont attorney to Cambridge lawyer.

Just after 8 p.m., family, supporters and a few stragglers were inside the Belmont Lions Club at the MBTA commuter rail station to join state representative candidate Margaret Hegarty to undergo the agonizing act that all candidate's must suffer through: counting votes. As the campaign team was in a backroom – actually the kitchen – were calculating the votes from poll watchers at 15 precincts in Belmont, Arlington and Cambridge, the handful of early arrivals were treated to boxes of pizza, beers and the king of all election-night food, Chinese. State Rep Candidates Make Their Case in Belmont

League of Women Voters forum allowed Rogers, Hegarty and Reardon to have their say.

It was around 9:30 p.m. Monday night, Aug. 28, in the Chenery Middle School auditorium when the main event at the Belmont League of Women Voters Candidates' Night Forum which most residents came to see finally got underway. To the Editor: As parents of two children currently attending Arlington Public Schools and as a public school educator, we support Margaret Hegarty for State Representative in the September primary. We know that she will work hard to maintain Chapter 70 funding which is so important to our schools. To the editor: The 24th Middlesex District is lucky to have three qualified Democrats running to represent us. After much thought and conversation with the candidates, I have decided to endorse Margaret Hegarty. We need more women legislators on Beacon Hill. In 2011, only 23.5 percent of the House was women. We need to do better. Anne Paulsen of Belmont represented us on the Hill for a long time and we were very well served during her tenure. Margaret is ready to take up her mantle.
