I'm not voting for him, but even I can appreciate that having a presidential candidate voting in Belmont is a great, historic event for the town. It is unfortunate that some residents have become so insular that they oppose any deviation from the norm.   more ›

Police Lay Out Plans For Election Day

Media to be kept in check with parking, traffic restriction near Beech Street Center.

Remember the media crush and traffic snarls this past February when Belmont's own Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, voted in the state's Republican primary? Residents had to weave their way around the Town Field neighborhoods due to crush of news trucks (and helicopters), curiosity seekers, political workers and protesters who surrounded the Beech Street Center. Now, as Belmont Town Clerk Ellen Cushman explains, multiply that activity by 10 come Nov. 6 when the world's media descends on the Town of Homes to witness the Republican candidate for president vote in his home town of the past 40 years. In an attempt to tamper, or at least control the coming news media "circus maximus," the Belmont Police Department has established a traffic and …

Consider these facts before you vote: 1. Is the economy better off now than it was four years ago? Based on the evidence, I'd have to say no. Wages are down, the the prices of everything we buy is up. The price of gas has doubled. Good jobs are scarce. 2. Are the slight "up tics" in the economy a solid trend in the right direction? I don't think so. First, the gains are very slight. Second, I …   more ›

Why does the Patch run this type of posting? The fact that Romney lives in Belmont does not make his daily whereabouts Belmont news. Nor does it justify the other campaign-related coverage that the Patch has published. If the presidential campaign really is something that Patch should be covering, then aren't you obligated to provide equal coverage of both campaigns? Or are you a partisan news …   more ›
