Obituary: Joseph R. Nolan

Five-decade long resident, "Triple Eagle" served on the state's highest court.

Joseph R. Nolan, a "Triple Eagle" who reached the heights of a long-judicial career as a member of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court where the long-time Belmont resident was known for his conservative views, died peacefully April 23, 2013 at Brighton's St. Elizabeth's Medical Center surrounded by his family. Nolan was 87. He died of complications of a broken hip he suffered at his home last Saturday.  Recognized as the first judge to serve at every level of the Massachusetts court system, Nolan was the conservative voice on the court that reflected his deep faith and beliefs garnered from a life that embraced the teachings of the Catholic Church.  Born in Mattapan, Nolan graduated from Boston College High School before serving in …

Obituary: Clark Kendall

Lifelong Belmont resident, he helped popularize the VW Bug in the United States.

Clark Kendall, a life-long Belmont resident who help popularize the VW Bug as one of the first Volkswagen dealers in the US, died peacefully surrounded by his family at his Belmont home on Friday, April 19, 2013. Kendall was 90. Clark was born on May 15, 1922 at 124 Goden St., the son of Francis Hathaway Kendall and Harriet Johnston Kendall, and brother of the late John Hathaway Kendall. Clark attended Belmont public schools, graduating from Belmont High School in 1940. He attended Bryant & Stratton Business School, and graduated from a course in Business Administration. Clark served in World War II for 39 months with the United States Army Infantry and as a Surgical Technician in the 123rd Evacuation Hospital in France and Germany. He …

Industrialist and devoted to the Catholic Church, Faye lived in Belmont for 44 years before moving to Rye, NY in 1978.

Robert Joseph (Bob) Fahey died peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2013. Fahey was 81. He died after a short illness. Fahey was born in Belmont on Jan. 31, 1932, the fifth of six children to Michael Patrick Fahey and Dorothy Sughrue Fahey who lived at 3 Essex St. He graduated from Belmont High School and earned his Bachelor of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953, and from Harvard’s Advanced Management Program. He married Mary Elizabeth Brine in 1957 in Newton, settling shortly after marriage in Belmont, where they had five children.   Fahey served two years as an intelligence officer in the U. S. Walter 'Wally' Flewelling: Belmont Selectman, Life-Long Resident, Died

A man from Belmont's past who brought the town into the future.

He was named Walter but he was known as Wally for his entire life. Wally Flewelling was a life-long resident of Belmont, who left town to serve his country and to find a bride before coming back to participate in leading the town during a transformation from a town attempting to retain its small town roots into a modern suburb.  Flewelling, who served as a Belmont Selectman for 21 years in the 1970s to the 1990s, died suddenly at his home this weekend. Flewelling was 83.  "He had an affable, engaging way of approaching people and encouraging them to do what was best for the Town," said Ann Marie Mahoney, who served on the Belmont School Committee while Flewelling served as Selectman. Dan Downey, an employee of the Belmont Public Schools, passed away suddenly on Dec 12. Downey, of Belmont, was 54. Dan was a computer specialist working throughout the school system cheerfully assisting staff and students alike. Downey was a man of many interests, collections and passions: he loved the paintings of Hokusai; Japanese netsuke; cactus and succulents – he was a member of the Cactus and Succulent Society of Massachusetts – digital photography especially of plants; salamanders of all sorts and owned several. He loved gems and minerals and had an extensive collection. Thomas K. McCraw: Harvard Business Prof, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Historian

Long-time town resident won Pulitzer for a narrative explaining regulations in business.

Thomas K. McCraw, a long-time Belmont resident who won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize in History for his narrative of how government regulation of industry affected the American economy, died this past Saturday, Nov. 3, in Cambridge. The Rutledge Road resident, who taught for 31 years at the Harvard Business School until 2007, died after a long illness, according to his family who spoke to the New York Times. McCraw was 72. McCraw's "Prophets of Regulation," for which he won the Pulitzer, "remains a seminal study of the development of American economic regulation and a sterling example of biography-as-history," according to a tribute from the Harvard University Press, which last month published his latest book, "The Founders and Finance," that …

Obituary: Betsey Morse Mayer

Belmont artist, landscape designer and business owner.

Betsey Morse Mayer, of Belmont, died unexpectedly on Feb. 11, at age of 72. Mayer died of a heart attack which took place in Vieques, Puerto Rico, where she frequently went to paint landscapes. In the course of her life she became an accomplished artist in the media of drawing, oils, watercolors and print-making. She also ran a successful business in landscape design, based in Belmont. Born in New York City, she attended there an elementary school for gifted children.  From the Dalton School she matriculated at Radcliffe College in Cambridge where she majored in Fine Arts.
