In the Venture Out portion of the Patch Passport series, we show you some of the best places you can visit in less than a tank of gas. Believe it or not, you actually don't have to go that far to feel like you're miles and miles away from Belmont. The Massachusetts Audubon Society's Habitat on Belmont Hill has the duel role of informing the public and members of the wildlife in a suburban location as well as being a haven for nature and animals. Just six miles from downtown Boston, this 90-acre urban oasis has been devoted to environmental education since 1970. A formal garden and natural trails at the Mass. Audubon Society's center in Belmont.

With more than two-and-a-half miles of trails that wind through deciduous and evergreen forests, across meadows, around a pair of ponds, and along a wetland containing a vernal pool, the Habitat's focal point is the visitor and nature center, a brick Georgian-style mansion where monthly art exhibits can be viewed. Outside the building is a formal multi-seasonal garden. Travel Back in Time at the William Flagg Homer House

Travel Back in Time with your Patch Passport to explore the history and roots of the community.

It's one of the most famous houses in the "Town of Homes." Built during the first great expansion of residential properties in the 1850s, the house on Pleasant Street – one of the finest examples of early residential Victorian design – was a summer house for a rich Boston merchant. It was where the owner hosted his wealthy friends before, during and after the Civil War and was used as settings for one of the foremost painters and illustrators in 19th-century America. And for the past 80 years, the William Flagg Homer house overlooking Town Hall has been the home of the Belmont Women's Club, celebrating its 91st anniversary in 2011. "What a magnificent treasure to have in our town. There are so few of these sorts of homes left," said Sandy …
